Mosaic Insights is a strategy, planning and design practice that exists to influence and create healthy social landscapes – liveable, sustainable places that support resilient, equitable, healthy communities across Australia’s urban and regional environments.

We have three core business areas:

  • Social science
  • Shaping cities and communities for liveability and resilience
  • Data and spatial science and analysis

We are a small multi-disciplinary team including planning and design, public health, geography, design and information, climate change, engagement, social science, spatial analysis, data science, water and sustainability.

We have staff in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. We are active in the research space currently supporting post-doctorate work in urban forestry and working alongside academics and researchers in multiple universities.

About the social sciences role

We are looking for specialists to join our growing social sciences and city shaping teams.

Mosaic Insights leads the social sciences practice within the Alluvium Group. As part of the ongoing development of our business, we are looking for a talented consultant to join our team in our Sydney office.

Our social science practice involves three areas of social science. We work across rural, regional and metropolitan areas to deliver:

  1. Social insights and evidence base to support and improve the biophysical outcomes of Alluvium Group projects - social impact
  2. Social design and predictive measures for resilience and transitions projects – nature and health, demographics, sentiment, behaviour
  3. Community led (participatory) approaches for nature, transitions, resilience liveability - codesign and collaborative management

Our shaping cities and community's practice involves working with client in urban and regional areas to develop:

  • Urban forestry / greening strategies
  • Open space analysis and planning
  • Integrated urban water management
  • Urban cooling and climate risk and adaptation planning

What you will be doing in this role

  • Working closely with the Mosaic Insights team in Sydney and nationally
  • Supporting projects and Project Managers to deliver work across the social science space. At other times there will be a need to support Project Managers in other work as required e.g. other project work, business development and process work
  • Providing social science skills across more than one of the following areas: the application of social science research methods, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, program evaluation, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, social impact assessment, policy analysis, strategy and program development, stakeholder engagement and communications.
  • Working with leading applied scientists, ecologists, economists and engineers across the Alluvium Group and our partners on challenging and meaningful projects that directly affect the future of our urban and rural communities and environments.
  • Helping to shape and grow our city shaping and data science offer and building on our existing portfolio of social science in Natural Resource Management in areas like the Great Barrier Reef and Murray Darling Basin as well as in urban water urban forestry and open space
  • Helping to build our company’s profile as leaders in the application of social science in developing healthy and sustainable urban and rural landscapes
  • Contributing to the delivery of projects on time, on budget and to the satisfaction of our clients
  • Contributing to the efficient and effective running of the Mosaic Insights business

Essential skills and experience:

  • Social science expertise and experience implementing social science research mixed methods including qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, interpretation and report writing
  • Tertiary qualifications in the social sciences or closely related discipline
  • A strong passion to improve how cities and/or rural landscapes work for communities and the environment
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and working with diverse stakeholders
  • 5+ years of professional experience
  • Project management skills
  • A confident communicator, able to present information in a concise and engaging manner
  • Demonstrated initiative and drive and ability to work in time pressured environments
  • An eagerness to help build our social science area of practice
  • Willing to travel interstate and to regional areas for short periods (when permitted)
  • Able to legally work in Australia (we will not consider applicants who require visa sponsorship)

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Prior experience in professional services consulting
  • Previous experience or understanding of urban green space, parks, environment, water and natural resource management and the relationship with social outcomes
  • Experience related to the sustainability of communities in areas such as urban design, public health and liveability
  • Established networks within our sector
  • The ability to interrogate and draw insights from large and diverse data and information sources relating to contemporary concepts, including liveability and resilience
