About the role

We are seeking a Team Leader (Lived Expertise) in the Greater Shepparton region who is passionate about championing the voice of lived experience, advocating for human rights and providing an alternative to traditional mental health responses through the practice of mutuality.

You will lead a dedicated team of Peer Workers providing compassionate support to people experiencing psychological distress, with delegated authority to make day-to-day decisions to ensure the operational needs of the service are met. In this role, you will oversee service requirements and work closely with a range of stakeholders, both internally and within the community. 

About the innovative service

  • Distress Brief Support (DBS) is a community-based, early intervention program designed to provide immediate, compassionate support to people experiencing psychological distress.
  • The service is part of a national trial under the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement, with a focus on co-design, lived experience leadership, and community engagement.
  • In Greater Shepparton, DBS has been tailored to local needs and is delivered entirely by workers with lived experience.
  • Working in partnership with Primary Care Connect, the DBS service will be offered through community engagement points and a short-term support team, which provides 2–3 weeks of assistance, connection, and referrals based on individual needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively and relationally to lead a dedicated multidisciplinary team in line with organisational Lived Experience Frameworks, quality processes & policies, agreed priorities and strategies to ensure delivery of high-quality, recovery-oriented services to people accessing the program and ensure required targets are met.
  • Working with people who have lived and living experience of psychological distress, both carers and service users, as well as working with a diverse range of community members and diverse stakeholders in the region.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and abilities gained from both an individual’s lived/living experiences, collective impacts and Lived Expertise, and be able to support the development of these approaches across the reach of Mind’s work.
  • Provide supervision to team members, using the principles and values of Intentional Peer Support, and provide de-briefing opportunities to people working in Community Engagement Points.

What you’ll bring

  • Completion of or willingness to undertake Intentional Peer Support Core and/ or Advanced Training. 
  • Tertiary qualifications in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by Mind are also desirable but not required. 
  • Experience leading teams, preferably in an outreach capacity.
  • Experience in Community Services, Mental Health, Disability, Social Welfare, Housing, Healthcare or Government sectors is required.
  • Ability to lead and develop a team through training, supervision and reflective practice to achieve best quality service outcomes and maintain practice fidelity.
