About the role

The Research, Advocacy & Policy Development division has a national focus providing strategic and operational leadership for investment in research and evaluation, business development, clinical governance, policy development and advocacy. In line with a growth strategy, Research, Advocacy & Policy Development is responsible for developing and delivering on Mind’s strategic goals for consumer advocacy, social change and contributing to a better, stronger Australian mental health system. The Policy and Strategy business unit holds responsibility for policy analysis, government relations, sectoral stakeholder engagement, and public advocacy and campaign development.

We are seeking a driven, experienced Senior Advisor for a fixed term, full-time opportunity. In this position, you will help deliver and manage a two-year project that will provide individual and systemic advocacy to help people with psychosocial disability to find safe and secure housing. Working closely with the Manager Policy and Strategy, the Senior Advisor will focus on influencing policy and practice, system mapping, strategy and policy development, and planning for advocacy and government relations.  

Key responsibilities

  • Compile, synthesise, analyse and manage the evidence base for the project, identifying key structural and systemic barriers to good housing outcomes for people with psychosocial disability
  • Ensure that data collection meets the needs of advocacy and campaigning, and that a lived experience of mental illness and mental distress is reflected in policy positions.
  • Help develop advocacy and campaign materials, grounded in the evidence base developed throughout the project.
  • Work closely with the advocates and colleagues at all project partners, to guide the project and ensure all milestones are met.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in Public Policy, Political Science, Social Policy, Public Health, Human Services or other related field as designated by Mind.
  • Proven ability to analyse policy documents and data, and to synthesise evidence, in support of systemic advocacy and campaign development.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in influencing for policy or system change on health, social justice or other public benefit issue.
  • Demonstrated project management experience applied to complex projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical and planning capability applied to complex organisational and system environments.
