About the role

The Locals act as front door to the mental health service system and provides a continuum of care and support including clinical interventions, wellbeing supports, and therapeutic support through an integrated mental health and alcohol and other drug framework approach. 

We are seeking a knowledgeable and empowering Aboriginal Wellbeing Worker for a permanent fulltime (38 hours per week) opportunity in the Dandenong area. You will work closely with Aboriginal health services, community organisations and kinship groups to provide opportunities for people to build or rebuild their connection to culture and develop connections with communities, elders and kin in a place of their choosing.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander service users utilising a social and emotional wellbeing approach, recognising the importance of connection to country and mob and kinship care.
  • Support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander service users where clinical treatment is required to understand what is happening and why.
  • Assist service users to reconnect or connect with local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and services recognising the health benefits of connection with country and community.
  • Connect with and engage local service providers to promote the Local and create pathways for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Engage and build relationships with local Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islanders elders, kinship groups, communities, community groups and organisations to ensure they are aware of the establishment of the Local on their country.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, AOD work, Peer Work, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health related field as designated by Mind is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of social and emotional wellbeing support, trauma informed practice, recovery oriented practice, anti-oppressive practice and intersectionality.
  • Demonstrated understanding of available community services, networks and supports.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in connecting and reconnecting with country, communities, elders and kinship groups.
