This position is an opportunity to genuinely make a difference within an organisation that is leading law reform efforts to address exploitation of migrant workers in Australia, and to support a global movement working to achieve justice for migrant workers. 

You will provide administrative support across a range of projects and functions that is flexible and responsive to support the team’s needs. This is the primary component of the role. From time to time you will also provide research support and, if you are a lawyer/law student, legal research. The ideal candidate will have experience working in an office environment and familiarity with common platforms and software, as well as meticulous attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience or an interest in migrant or worker rights is desirable.

Responsibilities

This role reports to the General Manager, and will also work directly with the Co-Executive Directors, Strategic Communications Manager, Legal Director and Researcher. Responsibilities include:

Office Administration

  • Arranging travel and meetings for staff and board
  • Circulating staff meeting agendas and taking minutes
  • Managing the general email inbox and responding to requests
  • Financial administration, such as coding and submitting receipts

Communications and External Engagement Assistance 

  • Supporting development of and engagement with external committees, including key allies in Australia and globally, and our migrant worker advisors
  • Supporting website and social media engagement
  • Assisting with document layout and formatting and ensuring the team is accurately applying brand guidelines
  • Supporting the new CRM implementation and ongoing management of contacts data
  • Tracking grant timelines, and assisting with grant applications and grant acquittal reports
  • Supporting the General Manager to record and report on Migrant Justice Institute's activities and impact

Research Project Support

  • Supporting the development and delivery of project work, including a major national online survey with migrant worker communities
  • For candidates who are law students, proofreading and reference-checking legal research reports, articles and other publications, and undertaking research tasks on migrant rights and labour rights in Australia and overseas

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Demonstrated organisational and administration skills and experience working in an office environment
  • Highly efficient with a meticulous eye for detail
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities, switch between tasks at short notice and proactively anticipate what needs to be done
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Well-developed writing and proof-reading skills, and the ability to undertake research
  • Strong IT skills including Office 365, CRM systems, and demonstrated ability to master new software quickly, including Adobe, Canva, Squarespace, Mailchimp
  • A passion for social justice and a commitment to migrant workers’ rights

Desirable

  • Work experience or academic studies in employment, human rights and/or migration law or another relevant discipline
  • Volunteer or work experience in a social justice or human rights organisation
  • Social media and production skills, including writing content and proficiency with graphics, layout, video and/or other content production
  • Proficiency in language(s) other than English

The role can be undertaken from home or our Melbourne office or in Sydney at UNSW Faculty of Law and Justice’s Centres Precinct co-located with numerous social justice organisations. 

For student applicants with prior commitments, the role can be commenced on 1 September 2023 (or sooner), or we will consider a start date of 1 February 2024.

We anticipate that the role will be 9-15 hours week, spread across at least 3 days.
