About the role
The Settlement Youth Worker will empower young migrants and refugees from new and emerging communities (and their families as appropriate) to address their identified settlement needs to improve their social participation, economic well-being, independence, personal well-being and community connectedness more broadly.
The position will be responsible for actively engaging youth to participate in programs lead by MiCare and partner organisations, as well as, strengthening and fostering leaderships skills of emerging and existing youth leaders. The position operates within MiCare’s Integrated Family/Client Services. Some of the key responsibilities of the role include:
- Co-ordinate relevant programs/projects and activities in response to identified needs of young people and their families in a range of different settings including schools, youth services, and other community structures. This includes but is not limited to homework programs, family engagement information sessions, youth-based camps and other recreational/ personal development/ social support programs targeting young people
- In collaboration with Team Leader, initiate and facilitate the development of key projects, responsive group-work, and other activities aimed at increasing the community connection and capacity of newly arrived young individuals, their families, and communities during the settlement process. This includes but not limited to community/group consultations, co-design of programs, and collaboration/planning with key stakeholders.
- Provide needs-based casework support to newly arrived young people addressing with the nine priority areas identified in the National Settlement Framework. The support includes outreach, advocacy, and assistance to youth with multiple needs.
- Develop and maintain respectful relationships with key referral agencies, community groups and leaders and potential project partners in the region in order to improve service coordination and referral, avoid duplication and improve local collaboration.
- Maintain accurate and detailed client files and records, ensuring data entry is kept up to date, and entered in a timely manner. Maintain confidentiality and privacy of client information and data.
- Be responsible for own time management, planning and organising own work. to meet role requirements. Ensure that the services are provided efficiently and effectively.
About you

Qualifications:
- Appropriate Tertiary diploma/certificate qualification in Community Services/Case Management/Youth work or other relevant qualifications, and/or equivalent demonstrated experience.
Skills
- An understanding of, and commitment to, the needs of newly arrived of migrant and refugee youth and their families, especially those from new and emerging communities.
- Strong familiarity of systemic and structural barriers that new and emerging communities can face in Australia and possible approaches for overcoming these, with regards to the areas of economic, social, and civic participation.
- Sound understanding of current Commonwealth and State policies related to immigration, settlement, income support, Child Safe Standards, MARAM Framework and Information Sharing Schemes, and other relevant social policies with demonstrated ability to respond flexibly to changing policy and program needs.
- Demonstrated experience in working with young people, and their families, from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, particularly those from new and emerging communities.
- Highly planned and organised and able to set priorities, work objectives and competing demands.
- Sound computer literacy and proficiency in use of Microsoft Office.
- Lived experience of migration, and resettlement, and/or capacity to speak a relevant community language and Knowledge of key services in the targeted region and surrounding areas preferred
A police check with no disclosable outcome, current medicare evidence of influenza vaccination and full COVID-19 vaccination is required by MiCare for this position.
