Your new team

The Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Service, in providing clinical psychiatry direction to the acute medical wards and outpatient clinics of Royal Melbourne Hospital, offers a unique specialist service. The service is supported by eight sessions of consultant psychiatry time per week, full time psychiatry registrar positions and senior RPN5 nursing staff.

  • We are a specialised consultation service located at RMH that provides clinical psychiatry direction to the acute medical wards and outpatient clinics of RMH.
  • There is notable demand from the medical wards in requesting support, consultation advice and treatment recommendations from CL Psychiatry.
  • The CL Psychiatry team work autonomously to undertake comprehensive mental health assessments in the general hospital setting for patients referred to CL Psychiatry, including specialist psychological assessment and provision of formulation of the presenting problem.

Your success in this role, will be in your ability to

  • Capacity to work autonomously to support individuals presenting in mental health crisis, where possible including family and carers in treatment outcomes.
  • The Consultation Liaison psychology position requires someone who has strong assessment and formulation skills and can readily communicate your findings to others and work well with others to implement personalised treatment or provide the interventions yourself.
  • Challenge yourself in a fast paced hospital environment in a range of medical wards alongside experienced nurses and psychiatrists and registrars.
  • Provide leadership in the orientation and support of psychiatry registrars who rotate through the team, you will be knowledgeable about psychological first aid.
  • You will be able to maintain the mental health relationship with various specialist teams across the hospital. So you are a confident relationship builder.
  • Be excited about bringing your mental health expertise and problem solving skills to the physical health stage.

Your Contribution

  • Possess formal qualifications and registration as Clinical Psychologist.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of mental illness and the assessment of disorders and application of interventions.
