Marlin Communications (Marlin) is a growing creative agency based in Redfern, that specialises in working with charities. We are inspired by the work of Howard Luck Gossage who said “Advertising is too valuable an instrument to waste on commercial products… it justifies itself when it is used for social purposes.” We believe that with thought, experience, and with skill, communications will improve the world by helping charities to build support for their work.
We work with around 25 Australian charities including Médecins Sans Frontières, The Smith Family, WWF, and Starlight Children’s Foundation. We help them to develop branding platforms and then execute direct response advertising and marketing campaigns.
Within our creative team of eight there are currently only two dedicated writers. This role has been created because we need more. We are looking for someone talented who wants to focus their talents on causes, and has the desire to become an indispensable member of our creative team. Reporting into the Head of Copy the successful applicant will help Marlin to enhance its reputation of distinctive creative that works.
Role’s responsibilities:
- Work on projects for range of clients and causes from children charities, to international development, animal welfare, and medical research.
- Work on projects at different stages of creative development.
- Interview relevant characters to develop content.
- Work with creative colleagues to develop strong direction for what a communication needs to say.
- Write copy attuned to personality of brand, and in the case of direct mail – the signatory.
- Develop written rationales for ideas.
- Receive client feedback, interpret, and accurately respond.
- Proof-read communications and make corrections.
- Work on range of media including direct mail, publications (such as magazines and websites) , and advertising media such as press adverts and radio scripts.
- Work with Creative Strategy Director to understand personality, position, and objective for every project.
- Take feedback and direction from Head of Copy with 15+ years of experience.
- Support Marlin to understand the client’s cause, and communication objectives.
- Impress clients and colleagues with your on-the-ball approach to service provision by proactively communicating the stage of projects and ensuring they are aware of their next steps.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have 5+years agency experience spanning concept development and copy execution.
- Have examples of work, and be prepared to illustrate how you know this is the career and sector for you.
- Be curious and capable of getting a broad range of people to open up. Marlin bases its work on discovering what charities offer the community that the audience will find compelling.
- Be a strong storyteller. We aim to share distinctive details that stick in people’s minds, and use stories to introduce the reasons why people should feel compelled to do what we ask of them.
- Be capable of writing for different objectives, ranging from brand positioning to direct marketing.
- Draw upon their understanding of marketing and communication principles.
- Be able to share anecdotes of their experiences as a charitable supporter, volunteer, or staff member – as an illustration of their passion for charities.
- Be determined to passionately support the execution of creative ideas to highest possible standard.
- Be available for immediate / short-term start.
