About the role

This position is situated within the Education Mobile Unit (EMU) Program, Geelong, which is responsible for providing early intervention education, for one day per week, to children and young people who are at risk of becoming disengaged from Education.

This position will work collaboratively with the EMU Teacher by supporting them to enhance the social and emotional learning outcomes of students. This includes working collaboratively with Guardians and each student’s Host School to enhance such outcomes.

This is a fixed term part-time opportunity (0.5 EFT) until December 2019.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the EMU Teacher to enhance the social and emotional learning of students, in an environment that prioritises child safety and unconditional positive regard
  • Work with individual students and in small group settings, building positive relationships with the children, their guardians and support teams
  • Implement a program of activities for a range of co-curricular areas, that promote social and emotional learning. This includes both classroom-based and Outdoor Education activities.
  • Support students in the transition process, as directed by the Principal
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and school staff, including those of the students’ Host Schools
  • Supervise students in unstructured recess and lunch sessions
  • Support the EMU Teacher in supervision of students while travelling or engaging in off-site learning activities
  • Maintain relevant facilities and resources to support the learning program
  • Attend staff meetings and other duties as required by the Principal/Deputy Principal
  • Participate in appropriate professional development opportunities and annual performance reviews and constructively participate in supervision
  • Observe and support the MacKillop values and ethos, the policies and procedures of MacKillop Education including, Sanctuary Commitments, Positive Behaviour Support and Restorative Practices.

Key selection criteria

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
  • Relevant work experience and a minimum Diploma Qualification or Certificate IV in Education Support or Special Needs.
  • An understanding of teaching and learning support strategies and the ability to implement these as required.
  • An understanding of social and emotional learning, and activities that promote the building of these skills and knowledge
  • Experience in Outdoor Education, with related qualifications, is preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level interpersonal skills including a capacity to develop constructive relationships with students, care givers, community service providers and other staff.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in understanding the unique nature of providing high quality educational experiences to young people with multiple and complex needs, including those marginalised from school and society through trauma, abuse and neglect.
  • Demonstrated commitment and capacity to actively contribute to a broad range of school activities including student excursions, camps and the marketing of our education programs to the Catholic Education Office, the Education Department and other stakeholders.
  • An understanding and commitment to the objectives and values of the organisation, including Sanctuary Commitments, as outlined above, and a capacity to represent MacKillop values as required by the role.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with others and exercise influence in a diversity of contexts.
