About the La Perouse Counsellor Role
We are seeking a compassionate and culturally aware mental health professional to join our team on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will provide therapeutic services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients while actively building relationships within the community. This role is vital in fostering trust and understanding, ensuring that our services are accessible and relevant to the needs of the community.
This role will provide mental health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from within a community-managed organisation, La Perouse Aboriginal Community Health Centre

Key responsibilities
- Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop and develop individually tailored treatment plans in collaboration with clients.
- Provide culturally competent counselling and care coordination telehealth and face to face services to clients, by appointment with informal drop-in capacity.
- Participate in care coordination with collocated services at La Perouse and other services and support clients to navigate health and social systems, linking them to relevant services such as My Health Record, My Medicare, My Aged Care, Centrelink, legal, housing, social and community, and mental health services.
- Enter service delivery data and client reported outcome and experience measures.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, workers and organisations to raise awareness of the service and develop referral networks.
- Maintain comprehensive and confidential client records in compliance with ethical and legal standards.
- Use activity data and prepare case studies to inform continuous service improvement and evaluation activities and CESPHN’s Activity Workplan.
- Engage in ongoing clinical and cultural supervision and professional development to stay informed about best practices in mental health and cultural competency.

- Actively ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others at work in accordance with the Work Health Safety Act 2011.
- Abide by your profession’s code of ethics and maintain a professional level of behaviour and conduct in the workplace, at all times.
- Attend relevant team meetings and events.
Qualifications & Essential Criteria
- A degree in psychology or social work, or a related field, with relevant qualifications in therapy or counselling.
- Strong understanding of the cultural, social, and historical factors affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and experience working with these communities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required to build rapport with diverse clients.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Good computer literacy, including confidence using electronic client management systems and the Microsoft 365 Office suite.
- A National Police Check (Vulnerable Persons) completed within the last 2 years and a current Working with Children Check.
- A current NSW Drivers Licence and willingness to travel to attend networking meetings and events.
Desirable Criteria:
- Current registration, or eligible to register, with a relevant professional body (e.g., AIPA, AHPRA, AASW, PACFA, ACA).
- Current registration, or ability to register, as a provider with NSW Victim’s Services and Medicare.
- Experience in providing PHN funded services and using the client management system, rediCASE.
