This role is divided into two parts, Electoral Officer and Parliamentary Adviser. Candidates must meet both sets of criteria. Working hours and location will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Since being elected in 2022, David Ettershank MP and his staff have campaigned on a range of issues, including better public transport, protecting green wedge areas, access to legal and financial services, women's health, gambling reform, and of course, sensible drug policies. This position is designed to enhance our ability to engage with the community and build support for progressive change in the west.

Electoral Officer Key Responsibilities

The Community Campaign Coordinator will work alongside the MP and other staff including the electorate office manager and policy and communications advisors, and be responsible for:

  • Implementing a wide range of communications tactics and managing mail outs, electronic direct mailouts and social media.
  • Proactively building community awareness of the MP's advocacy for key issues.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest messaging and communications research to help improve our work wherever possible.
  • Maintain an extensive network of government, local and industry contacts, and knowledge of services available to constituents.
  • Maintain a detailed knowledge of local and topical issues and ensure the Member is fully briefed on them in a timely manner, with the aim of mitigating any risks or adverse community responses.

Electoral Officer Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated behaviours consistent with Electorate Officer values and Code of Conduct, including the ability to display high levels of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, and respect in relationships with others and decision making.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to provide the highest level of client service in a challenging environment, providing sound advice and maintaining the strictest confidence on all issues.
  • Excellent computer skills with experience in MS suite of software and use and maintenance of online communications.
  • Sound coaching and mentoring skills with ability to support other staff in a team environment, provide direction where required and respect the needs of others.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Due to the nature of the business conducted within the electorate office, a high level of confidentiality must be maintained. It is the duty of the employee to ensure that this is strictly adhered to at all times.

Electorate officers are subject to national name (police) checks and must hold a valid working with children check. Holding a current drivers licence is advantageous.

Pursuant to section 30(5) of the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005, your time as an Electorate Officer precludes performing ‘party-specific activity’ for that part of your contracted hours. ‘Party specific’ activity means any activity for the dominant purpose of directing how a person should vote at an election, by promoting or opposing the election of any candidate at the election; or a registered political party; or an elected member.

Conditions of employment are pursuant to the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005 and the Electorate Officers’ (Victoria) Single Enterprise Agreement.

Electorate Officers are bound by the Electorate Officer Code of Conduct and required to demonstrate the Electorate Officer Values in the performance of their duties.

Parliamentary Adviser Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing, executing and evaluating campaigns on key issues, through a range of tactics including petitions, community meetings, door knocking and events.
  • Coordinating campaigns and communications with the Legalise Cannabis Party office (this work is isolated to one day per week).
  • Build local campaign networks and community alliances.

Parliamentary Adviser Key Selection Criteria:

  • A familiarity with the community, key organisations and local issues of Melbourne’s western suburbs is strongly preferred but not mandatory.
  • Proven initiative and organisational ability, particularly working autonomously to determine priorities and perform a broad range of office support duties, often to tight and demanding deadlines.
  • Sound written and oral communication skills with a proven ability to undertake research and prepare written materials including reports, submissions, and correspondence.
  • Proven experience with demonstrated results in community, industrial or other organising.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders from government and peak organisations to local community organisations and constituents.
  • An understanding of data management and ability to apply data to strategy with a solid understanding of the political system in Victoria and how to apply it to targeted organising.
