What you'll be doing

The Daily Support Team (DST) is designed to work with people who are entrenched in homelessness, who have complex needs, and who have received support from multiple services in the past, but for whom a lasting housing outcome has not been achieved. The model also seeks to provide early intervention activities for people who are newly homeless and seeks to address ways to rapidly divert them away from ongoing rough sleeping.

The program is delivered in collaboration with City of Melbourne, particularly the City Safety, Security and Amenity branch. The DST is accountable to council on a daily basis and works to achieve a coordinated response to rough sleeping within the City of Melbourne.

This position provides assertive, persistent outreach to identify, engage and work with clients to achieve sustainable housing outcomes.

In this role, you will:

  • Respond to referrals for, and proactively find, people who are sleeping rough in order to engage with them and provide/coordinate an appropriate response.
  • Conduct assertive and persistent outreach to provide purposeful assistance to clients with complex needs and challenging behaviours.
  • Offer appropriate and timely support, including referral, assessment, and advocacy.
  • Short term support to a nominated case load of clients to assist in seeking suitable housing options.
  • Utilise assessment tools to identify people in the most need of program resources.
  • Sensitively survey people who are sleeping rough providing program intelligence for effective resource allocation.
  • Respond to secondary contacts i.e. City of Melbourne, Victoria Police and Emergency Departments.
  • Work with Functional Zero projects and complete referrals to the City of Melbourne By Name List and Service Coordination project.

What we're looking for (key selection criteria)

  • A tertiary qualification in human services, social work, or other relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with clients who have a history of homelessness, rough sleeping and multiple and complex needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use advocacy skills to negotiate access to necessary services for clients across a range of service systems.
  • Knowledge of the housing service system.
  • Experience in assertive outreach, working and providing support to clients who have complex needs in non-office-based settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities, coupled with the ability to act with empathy, sensitivity and understanding.
  • Well-developed and demonstrated organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work autonomously and as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work flexibly and have the ability to manage competing demands and the setting of boundaries and limits.
