The Better Health and Housing Program (BHHP) supports individuals with health issues who are experiencing chronic homelessness. For the majority of residents using the BHHP, the duration of stay is six months. The BHHP allows residents to stabilise their health and be part of a vibrant and supportive community with a focus on enhancing living skills, social connection and participation.

The program will support participants to improve their health and wellbeing, whilst working towards long-term accommodation.The BHHP runs in partnership with St Vincent Hospital Melbourne and Brotherhood of St Laurence. The Housing Mental Health Pathways Program (HMHPP) supports acute mental health patients with a history of homelessness who have no suitable accommodation at the time of discharge from hospital. This program supports patients of St Vincent’s and The Alfred Hospital’s psychiatric units.

About the role

As After-Hours Engagement Workers, you will be primarily responsible for the smooth operation of the Front of House area and undertake a range of administrative tasks and other activities as directed. You will provide support to residents, maintain the security of the building, and maintain the house dynamics to ensure an effective, safe and well-functioning facility. You will be required to form excellent rapport and maintain relationships with both residents and the people who are supporting them.

Ideally, you will have the ability to juggle competing demands in a residential setting, working with people with significant issues requiring support - such as AOD, mental health, trauma, disability, and homelessness.

You will:

  • Engage with tenants in an informal capacity, working from a strength based, client focused framework.
  • Monitor and manage the dynamics of Sumner House with the aim of providing an environment which is safe, peaceful and enjoyable for all.
  • Respond to incidents and breaches of Sumner House rules.
  • Liaise with the St Vincent’s Hospital team to support residents’ after-hours.
  • Provide appropriate support to clients including crisis coaching, safety planning and other responsive support.

About you (Key Selection Criteria)

  • Experience on the delivery of after-hours support services to people with complex needs relating to homelessness.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in human services or other related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of housing and homelessness policy, context and systems.
  • Experience in responding to critical incidents and emergency procedures including defusing client behaviour.
  • Availability to work a variety of after-hours shifts including nights and weekends.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of Launch Housing and our mission to end homelessness.
