About the position

The Institute for Human Security and Social Change (the Institute) is a Research Centre within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University. Our multi-disciplinary team has extensive experience in Indigenous-led and international development. We aim to understand, support and enable the practice of inclusive social change in Indigenous Australia, the Pacific and Southeast Asia. We do this through research, teaching, outreach and providing direct support to organisations that are involved in social change. We work with these organisations as partners to design and deliver approaches to monitoring, evaluation, research and learning which are politically informed and which draw on different world views and understandings of value and change. We take a developmental approach to providing this support, promoting partner ownership and control, privileging and amplifying the voices of the people that social change initiatives are designed to benefit and building partner and participant capacity.

In this exciting new role you will contribute to the design and delivery of culturally appropriate monitoring, evaluation and learning and other research services to our expanding portfolio of partners in Indigenous Australia and internationally. You will help build relationships with our partners and with other stakeholders. You will contribute to the development of new grant proposals and tenders and to the development and application of new knowledge, including through piloting new approaches, co-authoring research publications and participating in debates.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position you will be passionate about social change and have a strong commitment to Indigenous-led development. You will have a relevant degree or postgraduate qualification or an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience. You will have demonstrated experience and expertise in locally led and culturally appropriate monitoring, evaluation and learning approaches.

To secure this role you will understand the role of worldviews, politics and power in these processes and you will be skilled in building relationships and collaborating with diverse stakeholders across different contexts and cultures. You will be able to work both with a high degree of autonomy and as part of a team. Finally, you will be able to travel both within Australia and internationally for 8-12 weeks per year, with this subject to COVID related travel restrictions.
