ABOUT THE KIMBERLEY LAND COUNCIL

Covering the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia, the Kimberley Land Council (KLC) commenced in 1978 and was formed by Kimberley Aboriginal people as a political land rights organisation. It has become the peak Indigenous body in the Kimberley, working with Aboriginal people to secure native title recognition, conduct conservation and land management activities and develop cultural business enterprises. www.klc.org.au.

Two-Way Science provides an opportunity for all students to learn about science from the world’s oldest continuing cultures, to strengthen Aboriginal student’s wellbeing and engagement and to build respect for Aboriginal histories, cultures, people, knowledges and experiences amongst school staff and students.

The Two-Way Science Coordinator will be responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of the KLC’s Two-Way Science Initiative, working collaboratively with the Department of Educations Two-Way Science Consultants in the Curriculum Support unit.

The Two-Way Science Initiative will improve STEM learning outcomes through community engagement and intergenerational transmission of Indigenous knowledge. It will build education partnerships between communities, rangers and schools; leading to increased capacity of Aboriginal families and communities to direct and deliver culturally responsive education programs with education providers.

The position will be responsible for managing the delivery of the program as well as reporting and evaluation.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for a person with a strong education and training background coupled with the experiences of working with Aboriginal communities in an education setting.

You will have the ability to draw the connection from traditional ecological science to western science and the education curriculum.

You will be a great communicator, having the ability to communicate between all stakeholders. You will have a passion for working with young people and improving education outcomes.

You will be a great mentor, empowering and enabling local Aboriginal people to lead the Two Way Science Initiative from now into the future.

Essential

  • Demonstrated and extensive knowledge and understanding of the strategic direction of Western Australia’s education system and contemporary policies, frameworks and issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated and extensive knowledge and experience in teaching in an education setting with Aboriginal students in urban, regional or remote areas
  • Experience in working with Aboriginal communities in reflexive action practice models
  • Good working knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultural and protocols
  • Demonstrated project management skills with a proven ability to plan, coordinate and evaluate culturally responsive initiatives in a complex environment
  • Demonstrated highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to build mutually respectful relationships and partnerships with Aboriginal communities, organisations and stakeholders

Desirable

  • Experience in working on conservation, land management and/or education programs, with the integration of traditional Knowledge.
  • Knowledge of CSIRO Science Pathways and integrated Two-Way Science learning programs
