About Us

Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (KNAC) is the registered native title body corporate for Nyiyaparli People with approximately 400 current members. The Nyiyaparli People are the Traditional Owners of approximately 36,684 square kilometres of land and waters in the East Pilbara region, including the Aboriginal communities of Jigalong and Parnpajinya, several pastoral leases and significant mining operations.

Locations within the Determination Area are places of particular significance to the Nyiyaparli people, including ceremonial sites, songlines, permanent pools and natural resources.

About the Role:

The Native Title Paralegal works under supervision and direction of KNAC’s Native Title Lawyer and is responsible for providing legal, clerical and administrative support.

The position will assist the Native Title team with Agreement Review and Negotiation processes; development of community legal information resources; undertaking legal research and preparing submissions on Native Title, Cultural Heritage and Environmental law reform and policy development.

Key Accountabilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Drafting and settling of correspondence and documentation as required, including matter chronologies
  • Undertaking research and development of KNAC policy responses to legislative reform and coordinate consultation processes
  • Preparing community legal information materials for Nyiyaparli Common Law Holders
  • Assisting with preparation of briefs, agreement summaries, benchmark reports and minute-taking at meetings
  • Assisting with reporting obligations and provide other reports and publications as required
  • Providing accurate and timely reports
  • Assisting with the collection of relevant legal data for reporting that informs and improves operations
  • Working within corporate policies and procedures, act with integrity and demonstrate ethical behaviours aligned with our KNAC’s values
  • Providing assistance to the Native Title Lawyer as required, including invoicing and billing processes

The Ideal Candidate has:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Paralegal/Legal Services
  • Minimum 5 years’ previous experience in Paralegal role/s
  • Demonstrated capacity to provide quality Paralegal services
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High level legal research skills
  • High level analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of the Native Title Act 1993, the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (and associated Regulations), and other legislation and common law relevant to the activities of KNAC
  • An understanding of the rules and procedures of the Federal Court of Australia, the National Native Title Tribunal, and State tribunals and courts having jurisdiction in matters affecting native title
  • Experience working in cross-cultural legal contexts, especially with Indigenous communities and/or organisations and commitment to the principles of advocacy and self-determination for Traditional Owners

Desirable:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and/or Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies or equivalent
