ACT Victims Advisory Board Members (Voluntary)

Justice and Community Safety Directorate

The Justice and Community Safety Directorate is seeking expressions of interest from members of the community interested in appointment to the Victims Advisory Board (VAB).

There are five vacancies on the VAB. Appointments to the VAB are made by the Minister for Human Rights.

The VAB is established by the Victims of Crime Act 1994. This sets out that the VAB’s role is to advise the Minister on policies, priorities and strategies for the acknowledgement, protection and promotion of the interests of victims in the administration of justice. The VAB may also, if asked by the Minister, help develop and maintain protocols and procedures for the treatment of victims by agencies involved in the administration of justice.

Members of the VAB are appointed to represent the interests of specific groups. There are:

  • Two vacancies for people who represent the interests of victims’ services groups (this could be people who work with or support victims or people who themselves are victims of crime);
  • Two vacancies for people who represent the interests of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community; and
  • One vacancy for a lawyer.

The members must be employed, practise or live in the ACT and must not be employed in the ACT Public Service.

The positions on the VAB are voluntary and are not remunerated.

For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community representative position, the Act requires that one of the positions be filled by a person of one gender and the other position be filled by a person of a different gender.

A number of ACT Government agencies involved in the criminal justice system are also represented on the VAB.

Meetings are generally held at least twice per year. Members are required to:

  • attend all meetings or arrange a representative;
  • communicate through email, phone and meetings;
  • present ideas and participate in discussions; and
  • work collaboratively to promote the interests of and achieve better outcomes for victims of crime in the ACT.

Appointments are for a period of 3 years.

Please submit expressions of interest outlining, in no more than two pages, your relevant skills and experience with a copy of your CV via the "Apply Now" button.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the [email protected] using the subject line: ACT Victims Advisory Board Members (Voluntary) enquiry via EthicalJobs for any questions about the position or the VAB.
