The Role

The Web Developer will report to the Team Leader – Digital Innovations and will:

  • Improve existing web portals to support councils and their communities in reducing emissions
  • Develop new digital tools and assets to support long-term strategic objectives

Skills & Experience

  • Graduate degree in computer science, programming or similar

How Your Day Might Look When You Join Us

Firstly, you’ll be welcomed into the fold and we’ll bring you up to speed with the kind of work we do! Ideally, you’ll have already undertaken some research to understand how we deliver real action on climate and work with local government and climate stakeholders throughout Australia.

  • You will deep dive into our code base and help us improve it over time
  • You’ll coordinate day-to-day work closely with the other developers and collaborate on joint projects
  • You’ll investigate energy and climate data and visualise it on our platforms
  • You’ll work with our product managers to design new tools or features
  • You’ll bring meaningful new projects from concept to maturity and help in reducing C02 emissions
  • You’ll support the Smart Lighting and Climate Programme in the delivery of client projects

For nearly two decades, Ironbark Sustainability has worked with councils and their communities to reduce greenhouse emissions, tackle climate change and implement sustainability projects and programs.

We deliver real action on climate change through our Smart Lighting and our Climate Programme, supporting councils with planning, decision-making and project implementation to reduce emissions. We are strongly value driven and only engage in climate-change and sustainability related projects.

The Digital Innovations team is an-house web development team that helps other teams across the organisation deliver innovative digital solutions to our customers. As a small team we aim for quick and agile turnaround through regular releases and offer a high degree of involvement in product design and related decision-making.

Data analysis and visualisation are the core of our digital offering to councils. Through our support, we aim to present data products in easy-to-understand formats (such as maps and charts) so that our clients are able to:

  • Make informed decisions about resource allocation,
  • Base project plans on reliable data and information,
  • Improve asset management processes,
  • Improve service delivery to residents and visitors of council areas,
  • And ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve sustainability results for the community and the environment.

Role Description

The Web Developer is responsible for supporting both the Smart Lighting and the Climate Programme in three core areas:

  1. Front End Development: Using React, JS, HTML and CSS to build reusable frontend solutions that deliver value to councils/users. Responsible for delivering robust & secure front-end code.
  2. Back End Development: Extending database solutions, configuration of AWS systems and development of API calls to support front-end requirements. Responsible for delivering robust & secure back-end code.
  3. Technical Growth: Working with other technical staff to improve practices and support the development of Ironbark’s digital asset base & skill sets, including development of new tools and platforms.

Other tasks may include the design of web maps for clients, data analytics and management as well as work on Ironbark’s digital asset base to directly support clients in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Key Duties

Key Duty 1

  • Continued development of existing platforms (Opticity and Snapshot Climate), including new features, bug-fixes and delivery of customer specific projects

Measure

  • Functionality of web offering is improved by upgrading existing and developing new features
  • Website is quick and responsive
  • Developed code is clean, concise with low bug count
  • Configuration tools to make configuration manipulation simpler are expanded
  • Customer projects are delivered on time and in-line with Ironbark’s expectations for quality
  • Technical support is provided to internal and external stakeholders as required

Key Duty 2

  • Support the development of new digital assets linked to long term strategic initiatives and ongoing project contracts
  • Discovery, exploration & implementation of new digital solutions to grow the core business

  • Advocates for scalable solutions according to project maturity

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in computer science/engineering, data management, programming or equivalent experience

Work Experience

  • 2-4 years of work experience in web programming/IT and/or clear examples of relevant experience, ideally with a link to smart technology, IoT devices or climate data

Skills and Knowledge

Specialist Knowledge

  • Well-tested expert programming skills in a range of programming languages
  • Proven experience in API development, scripting and debugging
  • Experience with website development
  • Experience and understanding with cross-organisation data management and data engineering
  • Knowledge of smart technology/IoT devices, smart city applications, street lighting and/or web GIS is an advantage

Coding/Programming

  • Javascript programming & other programming languages
  • Front-end coding: HTML, CSS, JS with strong React experience
  • Back-end coding: NodeJS preferred
  • Data engineering and database (SQL and NoSQL) knowledge
  • Data visualisation: e.g. through Python or D3.js
  • UX/UI design experience is a bonus

  • Ability to manage own time and prioritise competing demands
  • Ability to work in a small team and in a highly productive environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
