The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisation funding world-class breast cancer research towards our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

Since NBCF’s inception in 1994, they have invested over $200 million into more than 600 world-class research projects across Australia.
In this time, the death rate from breast cancer in Australia has reduced by over 40%. They have seen remarkable results, but the job’s not done.

Impact you will have in this role

The Philanthropy Manager is a pivotal role that will accelerate the growth of NBCF’s major gifts program, driving progress toward their bold vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

Reporting to the General Manager of Philanthropy and Partnerships, you will manage a high-profile portfolio of major donors, including high-net-worth individuals, families, giving circles, and private foundations. Your strategic efforts will directly support NBCF’s bold 5-year Pink Horizon research strategy, to enable and accelerate the innovative research needed to end deaths from breast cancer.

In this role, you will be empowered to grow and nurture new and existing relationships, re-engage lapsed prospects, and transition mid-level donors into major donors. You will be responsible for managing your own pipeline of opportunities, making six-figure asks, and collaborating with the Individual Giving team to identify opportunities for cross-promotion and donor upgrades.

As the Philanthropy Manager, you will be at the heart of building NBCF’s funding capacity, playing a key role in delivering long-term impact and ambitious growth for their vision. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a transformative team, ensuring that NBCF’s critical work in breast cancer research is supported by a sustainable and flourishing philanthropic network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Communicate, influence, and engage supporters with the potential to make high-value donations.
  • Meet targets to identify new prospect supporters and networks to grow the high-value portfolio.
  • Solicit and close six- to seven-figure gifts.
  • Develop and execute personalised cultivation and solicitation strategies to meet annual and multi-year fundraising goals.
  • Prepare compelling donor proposals, impact reports, and other materials in collaboration with internal teams to solicit funds.
  • Work with high-value giving circles to retain and grow membership.
  • Organise small engagement events, meetings, or experiences to steward donors and support team members with external events as required.
  • Provide regular reports to the General Manager, Philanthropy and Partnerships.
  • Track and monitor portfolio income and support in preparation of budgets and quarterly reforecasts.
  • Ensure timely and accurate tracking of all donor interactions and gifts in the CRM system (Raiser’s Edge).
  • Analyse philanthropic sector trends and advise on opportunities to enhance income for the portfolio, based on market insights and donor feedback.

Skills and Experience

  • A background in major gift fundraising with the ability to acquire new supporters, steward existing donors, and make the ask.
  • Proven success securing major gifts, and managing donor portfolios to achieve financial targets, securing 5-7 figure donations.
  • Proven ability to influence and engage a broad spectrum of supporters while fostering strong relationships.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating long-term relationships and driving growth aligned with targets.
  • Proven experience in crafting comprehensive and compelling funding proposals and identifying key impact areas.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written in order to effectively communicate to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Empathetic listener with a donor-centric focus.
  • Effective time management abilities, results-oriented and highly motivated approach to work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience in medical research is highly desirable.
  • A commitment to support NBCF’s bold 5-year research strategy, fuelling groundbreaking research to progress towards a future of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.
