The Immigration Advice and Rights Centre (IARC) is a specialist, not-for-profit community legal centre (CLC) with over 35 years’ experience in migration law and policy.

Its mission is to provide free, expert legal advice, assistance and education in all areas of migration, refugee and citizenship law and to leverage its experience and expertise to influence positive change in the Australian immigration system.

The Position

The role of the Admin Officer is to assist IARC to respond to the high volume of requests that it receives each day for legal assistance. The Admin Officer is supervised by and works closely with the Intake Coordinator who manages IARC’s reception and coordinates IARC’s client intake processes. The client intake process is also assisted each day by a duty solicitor who provides guidance on triaging clients, and by a team of volunteers.

Major Accountabilities

  • Provide person-centred client intake services to people contacting IARC for legal assistance through:
    • Answering incoming telephone calls and responding to voicemail messages;
    • Responding to emails and online enquiries;
    • Providing information and referrals;
    • Booking appointments and interpreters for legal advice services;
    • Recording information and data into internal systems and databases.
  • Providing general administrative support to the legal team including calendar management, managing incoming and outgoing mail and filing.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Demonstrated administrative skills including strong attention to detail and the capacity to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated skills in dealing confidently and courteously with a range of different people by phone, email and in person.
  • Well-developed writing skills to draft simple correspondence of a non-specialist nature.
  • Sound computer skills and experience using Office 365 and client management systems.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal direction and collaboratively in a team environment.

Desirable

  • Experience working with clients from social disadvantaged or culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Salary and Benefits

The role is 21 hours per week. This can be done over 3 days or more per week (i.e. less hours over more days). IARC’s business hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. The contract is to 30 June 2024.

The salary and conditions of this position are set out in the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (SCHADS Award). The position is graded at Level 3 of the award with an annual salary between $71,320 to $76,477 pro rata.

IARC is a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) and is currently able to offer salary packaging subject to IARC’s Salary Sacrifice Policy. Please note that if IARC’s PBI status changes, the salary packaging arrangements may be withdrawn.
