Huntington's Queensland

About the organisation and the role

Huntington’s Queensland is part of a national network that provides leadership, support, education and advocacy to enable people affected by Huntington’s Disease (HD) to live their best life, by shaping a future which is supportive, inclusive and empowered.

As a leading advocate for the merger of Huntington’s associations across Australia, Huntington’s Queensland is excited about the opportunities the newly created body organisation, (Huntington’s Australia) will provide for the Huntington’s community, our staff and stakeholders.

The secondment of one of our Advisory team to another State has created an opportunity for a counsellor/social worker to join the Brisbane team on a part-time basis (0.8) for up to 6 months.

This role will work with the Huntington’s Queensland team, to arrange and facilitate outreach services, and social and support/carer group activities; delivering education and training to community groups and the health sector to increase understanding of Huntington’s disease; assisting people impacted by the disease to access government and health services; providing counselling and mental health support; and advocating for both individuals and the Huntington’s community as a whole.

About You

However, Huntington’s Queensland is open to this being an early career development opportunity for someone wanting to build their expertise in this rewarding not for profit sector.

You should also have:

  • a sound knowledge of relevant legislation / regulations
  • the ability to build trust with clients who may have complex physical, social, and psychological care needs is essential.
  • high level written, and verbal communication skills backed up by the ability to negotiate with, and influence service providers and stakeholders on behalf of participants.
  • good planning and organisational skills which enable you work effectively to achieve deadlines and balance priorities.
  • the ability to develop effective working relationships with health and community service providers is essential.

HD-specific training will be provided as required.
