The Commission has a non-ongoing opportunity for 6 months until 30 June, 2024 for an APS 6 Policy Officer to work in the Strategic Policy and Partnerships Team in the Sydney office (remote and flexible working arrangements are available). Salary range $85,826 - $98,079 pro rata + 15.4% superannuation.

Skills & Experience

Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Undertake research and policy development duties relating to a broad range of human rights in both domestic and international contexts. 
  • Prepare correspondence, speeches, reports, briefings and other materials.
  • Contribute to projects in accordance with decided goals, timelines and budget, as directed.  
  • Maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, internally and externally.
  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders across the Commission in the planning, administration and conduct of the team’s work and in the development and delivery of the Commission’s identified goals and priorities. 
  • Provide organisational and logistical support for activities conducted by the Strategic Policy and Partnerships team. 
  • Other duties consistent with the above as directed. 

Selection Criteria:

  •  A good understanding of Australia’s international human rights obligations and contemporary human rights and social justice issues in Australia.  
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to work with minimal supervision, to set priorities, to meet deadlines, to work effectively in a small team and to respond and easily adjust to changing work demands. 
  • Demonstrated ability in conducting research and policy analysis, including conducting desktop research (preferably into topics of relevance to human rights) and writing reports to a high standard. 
  • Well-developed relationship management skills, with a capacity to ensure that various stakeholder interests are recognised and managed positively and professionally. 
  • Proficient computer skills including in using MS Office, SharePoint and use of databases.
