The Australian Human Rights Commission (the Commission) partners with other federal bodies to advance human rights and support inclusive and safe workplace cultures. The Commission’s Security Group includes partnerships with the Australian Defence Force/Department of Defence (Defence), the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Australian Border Force (ABF). The Security Group forms part of the Sex Discrimination Commissioner’s portfolio.

The Security Group Partnership Teams are looking for APS 5 Associate Policy Officers in either of the three Partnership teams on a non-ongoing full-time basis for up to 2 years (flexible work arrangements are available). The roles will contribute to the Commission’s work promoting a human-rights based approach to organisational cultural reform.

Salary range $77,533 to $85,383 pa + 15.4% superannuation.

The Role

As an Associate Policy Officer in the Security Group, you will leverage your excellent research and organisation skills to contribute to a variety of projects and activities to build safe, diverse and inclusive workplaces within the partner security agency. Your involvement may encompass projects such as diversity and inclusion in recruitment and retention, bolstering inclusive leadership capabilities, and advocating for gender equality and respectful workplace behaviours.

Responsibilities

Under the broad direction of the Partnership Director and/or Project Lead, you will undertake a range of duties including:

  • Undertake qualitative and quantitative research and analysis on issues relating to diversity and inclusion, workplace behaviour, leadership and workplace cultural reform.
  • Contribute to developing high-quality written materials for a range of audiences, such as speeches, reports, presentations and briefing papers.
  • Provide accurate and timely project support in relation to human-rights-based approach to cultural change in Australian security agencies.
  • Assist with planning and provide organisational and logistical support for program and project activities including consultation visits, monitoring project mailbox, maintaining SharePoint sites.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members in the Security Group and maintain key stakeholder relationships, particularly within the partner agency.
  • Other duties consistent with the above as directed.

Selection Criteria

  1. Ability to conduct research and policy analysis, including desktop research into topics of relevance to human rights or cultural reform. Experience with statistical packages and tests and qualitative analysis software such as NVivo is desirable).
  2. Good verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information clearly. Experience in delivering training or workshops, client interviewing or service delivery, or coaching is desirable.
  3. Strong written communication skills, including the ability to contribute to high-quality research outputs such as reports, papers and briefs.
  4. Strong organisational and project support skills, including logistical support and diary management, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising quality.
  5. Well-developed relationship management skills, with a capacity to ensure that various stakeholder interests are recognised and managed positively and professionally.
  6. Excellent computer skills including MS Office, SharePoint and use of databases. Advance MS Office skills including ability to use macros is desirable.
