ILGA Oceania is part of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association - a worldwide federation of more than 1,800 organisations from over 170 countries and territories campaigning for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex and queer plus human rights. ILGA wants a world where the human rights of all are respected and where everyone can live in equality and freedom: a world where global justice and equity are assured and established regardless of people’s sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC).

ILGA Oceania works to support the rights of, and provide a voice for all: lesbian, gay, intersex, bisexual, sister girls, brother boys, takatāpui, queer, gender queer, trans, whakawāhine, tangata ira tāne, mahu, vakasalewalewa, palopa, fakaleiti. akava'ine, fa'afafine, and fakafifine of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

The Opportunity

ILGA Oceania has funding to advocate for the decriminalisation of activity on the grounds of a person’s SOGIESC across the Pacific region and needs an experienced Executive Officer to lead its strategy and operations.

This role will see you turning your hard to a variety of responsibilities including:

  • Working with the board on on-going strategy
  • Engaging with key stakeholders in the region to promote and coordinate decriminalisation work
  • Establishing and leading all internal operations of the organisation
  • Leading ILGA Oceania to deliver strategic and project outcomes.

This role is for three-days per week until December 2024. Dependent on funding, there may be an opportunity for contract renewal.

Location is flexible across the Pacific region.

About You

You have a deep commitment to human rights and social justice and experience in working with marginalised groups in the Oceania region. You must be from the region and have expertise and an intimate knowledge of human rights issues impacting on LGBTIQ+ communities.

With experience as an Executive Officer, you bring a range of capabilities, including:

  • Ability to conceive, implement and monitor a strategic plan in collaboration with board members
  • Well-developed skills in working with governments, human rights institutions, member-based organisations, LGBTQI+ organisations and international human rights organisations
  • Strategic thinking and ability to evaluate options based on environmental trends
  • Well-developed operational skills including financial management, fundraising, and reporting
  • Fluency in English and experience working in a multi-lingual environment

You have presence, gravitas, humility, and empathy in engaging with people from a variety of backgrounds and sensitivity to issues relating to diversity, gender equity, and human rights.
