About CPR

The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) is a not for profit organisation formed in 2008 in response to a 2 year investigation the revealed the routine abuse and exploitation of racehorses in the Australian Racing Industry.

We are, primarily a volunteer run organisation based in Melbourne. We have formed alliances with many animal rights and animal protection organisations around Australia as well as internationally in New Zealand, USA, Italy, Switzerland and the UK.

Our Objectives

Our aim is to create public awareness of the inherent cruelty in racing and make the racing industry accountable for the horses they breed for profit.

In the time since CPR was formed, we have seen many positive changes take place for racehorses. You can view some of our achievements here. We have also seen a dramatic decline in interest in horseracing over this time. The Melbourne Cup Carnival for example has seen more than a 30% decrease in attendance over the last 12 years.

Our latest campaign, ‘Nup to the Cup’ is all about providing fun cruelty free alternatives to going to the races, especially during the Melbourne Spring carnival. It’s popularity is increasing every year as we see more events being held to celebrate and raise money for animals instead of exploiting them.
