ABOUT US

The HIV/AIDS Legal Centre (HALC) is a specialist community legal centre that provides high quality legal services around HIV, Hepatitis and the law. HALC provides free and comprehensive legal assistance to people with an HIV or Hepatitis-related legal problem; undertakes community legal education for professionals and the wider community; and engages in law reform activities including public interest litigation.

The Centre is seeking an Administration Officer/Projects, Policies and Law Reform Officer for a period of 12 months (with possibility of extension subject to funding). The successful candidate will address the selection criteria below.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative Officer

Take carriage of entering data into the CLASS database including by:

  • Updating existing entries for the past 12 months for consistency;
  • Training volunteers on CLASS to ensure consistency and updating the training manual;
  • Review and update new entries for consistency;
  • Produce reports as required.
  • Keep up to date with new developments relating to the CLASS data base and inform other staff of these new developments.
  • Revise and update all HALC policies in contemplation of NACLC accreditation requirements and also how the policies are enacted within the organisation on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assist the Principal Officer as required with other tasks related to HALC’s ongoing Accreditation requirements.
  • Assist all staff and volunteers as needed with answering phones.
  • Liaise with IT, accountants, and other support services to assist with the smooth running of the centre.
  • Assist the Principal Officer with funding tenders and other fundraising activities.
  • Facilitate the recruitment of staff and volunteers as required.
  • To undertake training and development as required.

Projects, Policy and Law Reform Officer

  • Oversee and maintain the HALC website.
  • Take carriage of HALC’s social media presence, including on Facebook and Twitter
  • Facilitate the publication, development and update of HALC guides and publications.
  • Initiate and participate in the development of legal and/or public policy concerned with HIV and/or HCV including identifying suitable public interest cases to maximise the potential for law reform.
  • Assist in research and contribute to the preparation of submissions, reports, recommendations and commentaries regarding law and administrative reform issues.
  • Work collaboratively with other community legal centres and organizations both within NSW and interstate on law reform and policy advocacy work.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Bachelor's degree in law
  • Office administration skills (including typing, mailing, record keeping and calendar management)
  • Competent in basic IT (Microsoft Office Software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and empathy with HALC's client groups, including people from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with disabilities (including mental health conditions), people from the LGBTQI+ community and people at significant social and economic disadvantage.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Experience with the Community Legal Assistance Service Systems (CLASS)
  • Experience in an administrative position in a legal or other setting handling confidential information
  • Qualification or experience in law, public policy, or public health
  • Admission as a Solicitor
