About the Organisation

The Hester Hornbrook Academy provides flexible education and learning options, including VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) and VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools). In 2023 we offer VPC and the VM VCE Certificates. Recognising that mainstream education is not suitable for all young people, our programs are driven by the personal pursuits of students and integrate wellbeing and life skills approaches. Teachers,Youth Workers and Education Support Officers work together to support students. We have classes and outreach learning options for students who are young parents, currently in or leaving out of home care, experiencing homelessness, or who have been disengaged from mainstream education.

About the Opportunity

To provide high quality, responsive educational support to young people. Additionally, our ESOs will be required to provide specialised literacy and numeracy support to achieve specific educational outcomes for students. This will occur through a collaborative partnership between the Teacher, Youth Worker, ESO and Learning Specialist. ESOs will assist with educational assessments to ensure our support is individualised and relevant for every student.

Our ideal candidate will be able to successfully demonstrate the following key skills and attributes:

  • Assist students on an individual or group basis in specific learning areas including literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Assist in the preparation of student resources, equipment, basic curriculum support resources and Individual Education Plans for individualised student learning to improve literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Utilise data and prepare learning plans for students to improve their literacy/numeracy outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with the Classroom Team (including teacher and youth worker), to observe how students are progressing with a task and difficulties they encounter, and aid where needed.
  • Apply an understanding of our HOPE (Healing Orientated Program of Education) to support students in a way that allows them to Engage, Equip, Empower and Extend. While having a thorough understanding of a range of interventions that promote engagement and inclusivity, build rapport, and develop prosocial behaviours and positive relationships.
  • Participate in regular supervision, supervise students, and complete additional duties as required, participate in whole school and campus meetings, the performance review processes and professional learning as required.
  • Maintain competency with ICT systems such as Microsoft 365, Student Management Systems, Student Learning Platforms, and other programs utilised in the school community.
  • Ensure that all Child Safe, risk management and HHA documentation is adhered to, whilst contributing to a culture of continuous review, improvement, and achievement of the HHA Strategic Plan (SP) and Annual Implementation Plans (AIP).
  • Ensure services are delivered within the framework Hester Hornbrook Academy’s/ Melbourne City Mission’s policies and procedures, legislative requirements, and meet the relevant service standards.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as directed by the Leadership Team.

Essential requirements of all candidates:

  • Certificate IV in Education Support or relevant experience
  • Current Working with Children Check
