About the position

Based across both our Wollongong and Nowra Hubs we are seeking a Mental Health Clinician to join our innovative risk De-escalation program. This is a short-term support program that provides early intervention to support young people who are at mild to moderate risk of suicide or self-harm. The program supports people between the ages of 12 and 25 and to gender and sexually diverse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and culturally and linguistically diverse people of any age.

The core focus of the role is to provide safety to young people when needed most. Key responsibilities include assessing safety and collaborating with consumers in creating a care plan which identifies goals in treatment to address drivers of suicide and self-harm.

Treatment primarily involves safety planning, family support, referrals to longer term services as required, and counselling most suited to issues identified in the care plan.

The Risk De-escalation programs operates collaboratively with other services within Grand Pacific Health, including, The Next Steps program extends support to adults at risk of suicide or self-harm and provides access both to mental health clinicians and peer workers who have a lived experience of mental illness.

This is a full-time (part-time negotiable), fixed term position until 30 June 2023. The position will be based across both our Wollongong and Nowra Hubs.

Selection Criteria

  • Current Registration as below;
    • AHPRA accredited registered psychologist. Provisional psychologists close to registration will also be considered
    • AHPRA accredited occupational therapist, mental health nurse, or Aboriginal health worker
    • AASW mental health accredited social worker, or accredited social worker.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in providing evidence based therapy
  • Demonstrated understanding of suicide and self-harm risk and best practice guidelines for treatment of these issues
  • Understanding of key issues in the health and wellbeing needs of young people
  • Understanding of key issues in the health and wellbeing needs of Indigenous Australians; people of gender and sexually diverse backgrounds; and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication and consultation skills.
