Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority: Delivering better protection and management of the iconic coast and parks of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Established on 1 December 2020, the Authority manages, protects, rehabilitates and fosters resilience of the natural, cultural and heritage values of coastal Crown land and marine waters along the Great Ocean Road.

About the Director Environment and Coastal Operations!

As a key member of executive leadership team, you will be working collaboratively with all areas of the Authority, Board, relevant external agencies and government departments, and will be contributing to long term strategic and financial direction of the Authority.

The Director Environment and Coastal Operations will be required to:

  • Lead, manage and develop staff, resources and the performance of a team of professionals and technical experts, including external consultants, responsible for the delivery of environmental and coastal operation programs and activities across the Great Ocean Road Region.
  • Develop and innovate with a focus on robust systems, processes and staff uplift to deliver services that enhance the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks environs in new and efficient ways.
  • Lead and expand the Authority’s environmental advocacy function across the Great Ocean Road region and more broadly.
  • Develop innovative management and monitoring approaches across land and sea boundaries in accordance with evidence based, best practice principles.
  • Where practical, embed environment and planning instruments, including the United Nations sustainable development goals, to align the Authority’s strategic initiatives.
  • Together with Traditional Owners identify and embed biocultural objectives to drive mutually beneficial natural resource management outcomes for land and sea country, including the integration of Traditional knowledge in decision making frameworks.
  • Ensure the Authority shapes and acts in its role in emergency management through appropriate planning and effective relationship management.
  • Develop strong and productive relationships with Traditional Owners, stakeholders, government authorities and community groups relevant to the Great Ocean Road region.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with academic institutes and relevant sector leaders to strategically position the Authority in our advocacy role and to make evidence-based, innovative decisions that will drive business success. These relationships will also focus on increasing our capacity to contribute to and/or lead research projects.
  • Provide strategic advice on issues requiring scientific or expert input related within this portfolio.
  • Identify grants and other third-party funding sources to support Authority initiatives.
  • Oversee the appropriate implementation and management of the directorate budget.
  • Provide timely, high-level briefings, submissions, reports, correspondences, and presentations on a range of environmental and coastal operation policy and program issues to Senior Management, the Board and Audit and Risk Sub-Committee, other government agencies and key stakeholders.

About you!

  • Relevant qualifications i.e. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environment, Conservation and or Biological Science, Project Management or similar to understand subject matter/best practice and advocate with confidence and authority.
  • 10+ years’ experience developing strategic growth and business development with a fact-based approach to potential impact and scenario planning, and resource requirements.
  • Experience running on ground operations teams to help identify and implement efficiencies, safety improvements and other business improvements.
  • Experience engaging with Traditional Owner and First Nations peoples and the wider community.
