Climate Action Campaigner

Gecko Environment Council

About this role

This role will be responsible for developing and implementing a climate action campaign strategy on the Gold Coast with clear, measurable goals to address climate change and will include the recruitment, training and managing of volunteers to assist in these tasks.

The role requires building a network of diverse allies seeking reductions in emissions and prosecuting the case for policy reforms through a variety of methods, including written submissions at a Council and State Government level to reduce emissions and improve monitoring and reporting.

It will engage with government departments and parliamentarians on reform opportunities and engage with supporters to build strong pressure to deliver the reforms needed.

The role requires an ability to enter communities in Gold Coast City to engage residents in discussions and education about climate change, personal and community-based actions they can take to reduce emissions and active involvement in advocacy for a climate action policy at Council level.

About Gecko

Gecko Environment Council Assoc. Inc is recognised by all three levels of government as the primary regional environmental organisation and, as such, is expected to respond to a wide variety of environmental issues. Campaign work is organised under the four fields of biodiversity, climate change, liveability, and sustainability in planning. The Gold Coast is a highly urbanised region with an extensive hinterland recognised as possessing exceptional environmental values. It has the twin challenges of developing a sustainable urban environment while protecting its environmental values from the pressures of a constantly growing population.

In addition to undertaking its own advocacy, Gecko works with a community development model which seeks to empower communities by providing information, strategies, and support to take action themselves to address local environmental and conservation issues.
