About the Role

Friends of The Earth Melbourne's Digital Storyteller role is to craft the work of FoE Melbourne collectives into compelling stories that illustrate our values, the diversity of our work, our commitment to community and our transformational impact. The role is designed to work with the campaign coordinators, the operations collective and Friends of The Earth Melbourne’s campaign collectives to tell a cohesive story of who FoE Melbourne is; what we do and how we do it on multiple online platforms. The Digital Storyteller will be expected to craft narratives for various social media platforms and to support campaIgn collectives in developing their own online digital communication strategies.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Craft the work of FoE Melbourne collectives into compelling stories that illustrate our values, the diversity of our work, our commitment to community and our transformational impact.
  • Work with the Fundraising and Membership Coordinator to promote and develop digital components of fundraising events and activities (such as peer to peer fundraising or donor events) as well as to identify the connections between socials and fundraising.
  • Develop the profile of FoE Melbourne’s key social media accounts, primarily Facebook and instagram.
  • Prepare short and medium-term digital storytelling/social media strategy for FoEM in conjunction with Campaigns Coordinators and the operations collective to deliver key outcomes including improving consistency of the FoE Melbourne voice, increasing post engagement, reaching out to diverse audiences, engaging allies and impacting decision makers.
  • Work with campaigners and collective members on including a social media and comms strategy in their broader campaign strategy, to deliver key outcomes such as increasing post engagement, reaching out to diverse audiences, engaging allies and impacting decision makers.
  • Produce high quality digital storytelling artefacts such as videos for youtube, Reels for Instagram, TikToks, animations and media messaging text and graphics to tell the story of who FoE Melbourne is, what we do and how we do it.
  • Liaise with FoE collectives working on active campaigns to ensure their work is amplified on FoEM social media and website.
  • Work with collectives to pitch media stories to mainstream outlets.
  • Enable rapid response – support campaign collectives to promote positions and activities during key moments in their campaigns. This can include designing graphics and collaborating on media releases(eg a campaign win, government announcement)
  • Work with campaign coordinators to produce the monthly newsletter which tells the stories of the campaigns, and work with the membership coordinator on data analysis and changing the structure of the newsletter accordingly.
  • Work with campaign coordinators to keep the website updated with latest news and articles (creating content in read, listen, watch and you tube videos) while maintaining consistency on how pages as well as checking the quality of entries uploaded by collective members and campaigners.
  • Conduct quarterly social media analytics reviews and adjust the social media strategy according to the latest data.
  • Identify skill gaps, design and present skillshares and training to ensure collectives are autonomous.
  • Troubleshoot and provide logistical support for collectives’ social media platforms
  • Proactively build solidarity and communication with allies via digital platforms
  • Work with membership and campaign coordinators to support collectives to create FoEM digital ads and support collectives in effective use of these platforms (including for example FB ADS)
  • Respond to requests received on social media platforms for getting involved with FoE Melbourne
  • Support the food cooperative and cafe with digital promotion campaigns

Accountability

The Digital Storyteller is part of the Operations Collective and is responsible for reporting to operations meetings and campaigners meetings. Day to day workload can be developed in conjunction with the full time campaigns coordinator and at the campaigners meetings, in consultation with other operations collective members. The Digital Storyteller is also accountable to the Strategy Collective and where required, the Policy & Advisory Committee (PAC).

Salary & Conditions

This is a fixed-term 12-month contract, based on 2 days/16 hours per week

The Digital Storyteller is employed under the Friends of the Earth Melbourne workers agreement. Friends of the Earth Melbourne has a policy of wage equity and as such all workers are paid at the same hourly rate.

The current commencing pay rate for this position is $40.35 per hour with a yearly salary of $83,928.00 per annum, pro rata, plus superannuation and entitlements.

This position may require a willingness to travel to events in regional Victoria or attend events or meetings outside regular working hours.

Hours of work

At Friends of the Earth Melbourne we consider a working day to be 8 hours, with one hour paid lunch break and with the option of flexi time within a working day or week.
