FoE campaigns from the local to the global on today's most urgent environmental and social issues; challenging the current model of economic and corporate neoliberal globalisation, and promoting solutions to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies.

About The Role

The Act on Climate community organiser is based at Friends of the Earth and would help to implement a campaign strategy designed by the Act on Climate collective, alongside campaign coordinator Anna Langford.

The organiser will work to raise public awareness of the Victorian government’s process to set a state Emissions Reduction Target for 2035 - the first target for 2035 in the country. They will build community power to pressure the Victorian government to set a 2035 Climate Target that aligns with the latest climate science.

Part of this work will involve building momentum by inserting the 2035 Climate Target into the political agenda in Victoria. This will involve working with the Act on Climate collective to advance Friends of the Earth’s overall climate policy platform and put it front and centre for all political parties in the state election build up.

The organiser will work with Friends of the Earth supporters, collective volunteers, ally organisations, community members, and other stakeholders such as unions, to build momentum and pressure around the campaign goals.

Key Responsibilities

The organiser will:

  • Help lobby MPs and candidates to put climate change front and centre on the political agenda.
  • Hold three events in collaboration with allies in the union movement and youth-led climate groups to bring new voices to the call for a science-based 2035 Climate Target.
  • Activate Friends of the Earth’s support base to attend events and identify local champions.
  • Work with the Act on Climate campaign coordinator and the collective to promote academic research that builds the evidence base for government action (i.e: On social media, media, email communications, etc).
  • Support community-driven tactics to put the 2035 Climate Target on the political agenda and secure commitments from political parties (i.e: meetings with local MPs and candidates, creative stunts, flyering at train stations and transport interchanges, etc).
  • Coordinate a response to the announcement of the 2035 Climate Target which mobilises community members to react.
  • Help build volunteer capacity in the collective.
  • Attend a weekly meeting for the Act on Climate collective (volunteers involved in the campaign).
  • Attend FoEM weekly Campaign Coordinator and monthly Strategy meetings when possible.
  • Contribute a community organising perspective on the evaluation of the campaign once complete.

Accountability:

The organiser will be accountable to the Friends of the Earth Act on Climate collective and FoE Strategy Collective.

The worker will be supported on a day-to-day basis by the Act on Climate campaigns coordinator, Anna Langford.

Salary & Conditions:

The organiser would be employed under the Friends of the Earth Melbourne workers agreement. Friends of the Earth Melbourne has a policy of wage equity and as such all workers are paid at the same hourly rate.

The current pay rate for this position is $80,912.00 per annum, pro rata, plus superannuation and entitlements.

There is potential for the role to be extended beyond the 10-month period, subject to funding.

Hours of work:

This is a 2 day a week position (0.4 EFT) for 10 months, with the aim of increasing it to 3 days (0.6 EFT) as funding becomes available. At Friends of the Earth Melbourne we consider a working day to be 8 hours, with the option of flexible time within a working week.

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • Experience as a community organiser.
  • Experience delivering issues-based advocacy campaigns.
  • Proficiency using Nation Builder, Zoom, Slack, Google Suite, and social media platforms.
  • Availability to attend night time meetings and some weekend actions.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent presenting and public speaking skills.
  • Proven ability to manage time effectively (i.e: well organised, work to campaign timelines, and meet deadlines).
  • Some knowledge of climate policy in Victoria.
  • Understanding of the campaign, advocacy, and political landscape in Australia and Victoria in particular.
