Who is Fresh Markets Australia (FMA)?
Fresh Markets Australia (FMA) is a national organisation that represents each of the six Market Chambers within Australia. Each market chamber is a member organisation representing its members: the fruit and vegetable wholesalers, located within their central market. There are six central Markets - Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Newcastle.
The role requires a professional, and energetic individual who thrives in a fast-paced team.
The National Retail Program Manager, with their small team, is the custodian of the national program, called ‘A Better Choice’. This program is in its infancy, and its sole purpose is to support all the local grocers as the preferred shopping destination of the consumer for all their fresh fruit and produce needs. The role is diverse, requiring a generalist skillset across operations, marketing and a passion to be an ambassador of the program throughout the communities that it infiltrates.
Leading a small team whose primary objective is to increase the awareness of the program amongst the hard-working small businesses that are the lifeblood of the local fruit and produce corner store and to inspire the everyday customer to check out the local fruit shop and support the local.
ABOUT ‘A BETTER CHOICE!’
"A better choice!" is an initiative designed to empower local economies and promote sustainable food distribution. This program is centred around supporting local fruit and vegetable shops across Australia. It strives to achieve significant impacts through the following key goals:
- Shortening supply chains
- Reducing the carbon footprint of food distribution, aligning with environmental sustainability.
- Promoting increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, supporting healthier lifestyle choices.
- Advocating for small business owners, ensuring their growth and success in competitive markets.

Stakeholder Engagement:
- Drive and enhance retailer participation in the National Retail Program.
- Lead and respond to internal and external stakeholders on all project elements.
- Engage and build effective relationships with committees, retailers and local marketing staff to achieve project outcomes.
- Manage and develop relationships with agencies and external stakeholders with a focus on driving performance.
Marketing & Communications Strategy Implementation
- Provide leadership insights and recommendations on target audience, marketing opportunities and campaign performance to support the team on the ground.
- Lead the development and execution of the strategic marketing plan, including budget management, tactical campaign plans, 'always on' activities and new campaign launches with the ‘A Better Choice’ team.
- Provide leadership between stakeholders and marketing teams, within the various states to provide direction on initiatives and assets to support marketing efforts of our partners for the purpose of brand presence and growth.
Commercial Performance
- Development of the annual budget for the program.
- Manage and be accountable for the implementation of the budget.
- Comply with relevant procurement and optimise operational, reputation, financial and legal risk associated with revenue-generating activities.
- Delivery of agreed monthly reporting to stakeholders.
Operational Performance:
- Lead the overall strategic direction of the program.
- Lead the overall marketing and brand planning of the program.
- Influence the bi-annual campaigns' full life cycle.
- Direct any promotional activities the program undertakes.
- Manage any partner promotions held with any partners.
- Oversee the social media strategy for the national program.
- Set and lead the Digital Platform strategy for the national program.
