ABOUT THE ROLE

The Manager, Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns is responsible for developing and executing FLS’s advocacy strategy, developing advocacy plans, and driving advocacy campaigns across a broad range of legal issues, including decriminalisation, decarceration and protection against family violence. and responding to law reform opportunities. This role will develop policy positions, law reform submissions and media campaigns to influence decision makers and advocate for systemic change for FLS clients and communities. Where appropriate, this role will incorporate and facilitate lived experience into FLS advocacy. This role also supports community legal education and project work where it overlaps with advocacy activities.

The Manager, Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns sits within the Policy, Advocacy and Community Engagement (PACE) Directorate, and is a leadership position that supports the management of the team under the Director of PACE.

You will make a difference by:

  • Developing an ongoing organisation-wide advocacy strategy and annual advocacy plans in consultation with teams across FLS and community partners.
  • In collaboration with staff across FLS, develop and execute advocacy campaigns on identified priorities and respond, and assist relevant teams to respond to systemic issues adversely affecting FLS’s communities.
  • Overseeing the self-advocacy group Voices for Change project management.
  • Providing management, supervision and support to the PACE Team.
  • As a member of the FLS management team, provide organisational leadership and contribute to the implementation of the FLS strategic plan and other organisational initiatives.

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Completed a law degree or other relevant tertiary qualification.
  • At least five years’ experience in a relevant role, e.g. policy and law reform, community driven advocacy, lobbying and campaigning, management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, decolonisation, decarceration, anti-racism and the vision, purpose and values of FLS.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyse and develop strategies to respond to complex legal and policy issues.
  • Demonstrated understanding of government policy, legislative processes and political dynamics and how to influence and effect change.
  • Demonstrated ability to be adaptive and responsive to changing and dynamic environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage staff and model professional behaviour.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively engage with media and public facing communications, including social media.
