First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing is a dynamic Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisation that provides trauma informed culturally appropriate Primary Health Care and Mental Health Care Services to First Nations People.
In 2024, First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing (FPHW) will open Baluk Balert Barring – the first Aboriginal Early Parenting Centre (EPC) in Victoria. Baluk Balert Barring, meaning ‘Many Strong Footprints’ in the Boonwurrung language, will provide First Nations families with a culturally safe model of early parenting care that builds on the strengths of Aboriginal families, culture, and community. The model of care has been developed in consultation with Community and in collaboration with Monash University’s Health and Social Care Unit. It will continue to evolve in response to the needs of babies, children and families who attend the EPC.
Services within Baluk Balert Barring will be delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of health and other professionals, experienced in delivering strengths-based and trauma-informed programs and services. Together they will ensure that babies, children and families who attend Baluk Balert Barring, have access to the healthcare, cultural, educational and social supports they need to stay together and thrive.

The midwife position within Baluk Balert Barring and First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing has been introduced to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to engage with a Birthing on Country model of care. Responsibilities include maintaining a case load of pregnant women and providing perinatal care to these women and their families.
This model of care is based on respect for and incorporating Indigenous Knowledge and traditional practice into a maternity service that is designed by and delivered for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and families. You will support these families to have the best start in life. You will offer culturally safe care to clients, liaising with the FPHW and Baluk Balert Barring multi-disciplinary team to get the best health and wellbeing outcomes.
You will assist in developing partnerships, establish clear referral pathways to services and advocate for clients. The role is required to build relationships with local services such as the local Maternal Child Health services, local Gathering Places, Peninsula Health, Monash Health, and Frankston City Council. You will work with a small multi-disciplinary team and be based at the Frankston clinic.
You will be a friendly, respectful person with strong organisational skills, ability to multi-task and prioritise. You will be passionate about working with Aboriginal families and commit to providing exceptional care with compassion.
You will love working as part of a close team but can work autonomously where required. You will have demonstrated skills and knowledge in antenatal /postnatal care and understand the importance of confidentiality and privacy.
