About Us

Fine Print is Valbec's bi-annual journal for people working in the fields of adult literacy and numeracy, English language and digital literacy. We are seeking a passionate and skilled commissioning editor to join our team. Understanding of the community and vocational adult educational space is desired, but not essential. Funding for the role is through the Valbec annual grant from the Adult and Community Further Education (ACFE) board. The editor is expected to work autonomously. Editorial Committee

The role reports to and is supported by a volunteer editorial committee of educators experienced in community and vocational education. The committee guides and advises the editor, assists with sourcing content and practical tasks such as proof reading. Reporting is via regular meetings with the committee.

Conditions of employment

  • The Commissioning Editor will be employed by Valbec as a consultant under contract for an initial period of 12 months then ongoing as agreed.
  • Remuneration is $15,300 p.a. The role is expected to take between 80 - 100 hours per issue, 2 issues per calendar year. Valbec will pay the commissioning editor a consultancy fee per issue of Fine Print upon presentation of a tax invoice with an ABN number.

Key Responsibilities, this includes and is not limited to:

  • Edition Management: Participate in the handover of the editing role and take responsibility for issues from the first issue of 2025. It is expected that Issue 1 will be published by the end of May 2025 and Issue 2 by the end of November 2025
  • Production Scheduling: Set and circulate the annual production schedule with the editorial committee, layout team, and Valbec administration officer.
  • Editing: Edit articles once received and and if necessary assist contributors in further developing ideas through the editing and writing process, creating issues appropriate to the themes and structure of Fine Print.
  • Editorial Meetings: Meet with the editorial committee monthly, or as required, to discuss and confirm themes, articles and writers.
  • Content Monitoring: Ensure the journal's content meets the page requirement (up to 60 pages, from Issue 1, 2025), addressing any shortfalls or deadline extensions with the editorial committee. 
  • Updates: Provide regular updates at editorial committee meetings. o Contribute a brief item to Valbec’s monthly newsletter, eValbec 
  • Proofreading Coordination: Liaise with the issue convener regarding copy deadlines and compile edit lists for the layout team. Allocate proofreading assignments to the editorial committee. 
  • Visual Content: Source images and illustrations for articles, if required, the front cover, and other sections as needed. 
  • Content Organisation: Prepare a list of contents in publication order, including titles, authors, and filenames. 
  • Proofing: Check final layout proofs, including advertisements and covers.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated strong experience and qualifications in writing and editing, publishing or related work.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, including time management.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, adult literacy education.
  • Work autonomously and collaboratively with the editorial committee, taking the lead with issue management.
