  • Legal Officer Grade I-III. Base salary ranges from $71,202 to $120,693 plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.

About us

NSW Trustee & Guardian protects, promotes and supports the rights, dignity, choices and wishes of the people of NSW. The agency supports the Chief Executive Officer and the Public Guardian to provide customer-centred services to the people of NSW, including some of the state’s most vulnerable. We do this by providing a range of multidisciplinary services including Will-making, estate planning, executorship, trustee, financial management and guardianship services.

We write more than 13,000 estate planning documents each year, support over 49,000 customers annually and manage over seven billion dollars in customer assets. A NSW government agency within the Stronger Communities Cluster, our services help support and protect people at critical moments in their lives.

About the role

The role provides high-level legal services, research and support in complex areas of law to ensure the provision of high quality, efficient and effective legal services for NSW Trustee and Guardian and its clients.

The Solicitor I-III (General) responsibilities include:

  • Provide high-level legal services (advice, transactions and/or litigation) to NSW Trustee and Guardian and its clients in accordance with the law, policy, procedures and practice standards.
  • Undertake legal and administrative matters and oversee the coordination of outsourced legal services in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Conduct litigation before Courts and/or Tribunals as the Department's representative. 
  • Interpret, analyse and prepare complex legal documents including legal records, correspondence, legislation, court orders, policies, reports, submissions, contracts, deeds and briefs to counsel.
  • Undertake research, manage and provide advice on matters arising in NSW Trustee and Guardian’s areas of operation to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Contribute to the development and review of legal standards and practices, policies, systems, procedures, manuals, precedents and processes; and development and delivery of training to ensure the delivery of high quality, effective and efficient professional services.
  • Contribute to the development and responses to legal reviews, law reform proposals and legal initiatives and programs, and respond to formal and informal requests for information, including court subpoenas and applications under relevant legislation.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need litigation and dispute resolution skills and be able to provide sound legal advice. You will need to work with a high level of independence and be proactive in developing work plans and priorities. You will also need to work collaboratively and provide support to non-legal staff. You should have a strong understanding of the structure and culture of government and the political and legal sensitivities of operating within the public sector.

Essential requirements

  • Completion of a law degree from an accredited law school or completion of the Legal Practitioners Admission Board Diploma in Law Course.
  • Admitted as legal practitioner in NSW and have a current NSW practising certificate.

 Desirable

  • Developed legal skills and experience which enable the provision of advice and representation in areas of law related NSW Trustee & Guardian’s financial management, estate administration and guardianship services.
  • Previous experience in any of the following areas of law would be desirable:
    • Wills and Estates
    • Equity and Trusts
    • Administrative Law
