The Electrical Trades Union is one of Australia’s largest trade unions, actively representing its members across Australia.

The Union is seeking to recruit an experienced Policy and Political Specialist to join the team in its National Office, located in the suburb of Rosebery in New South Wales. Reporting directly to the Divisional Secretary and working closely with the ETU Assistant National Secretary, the position will provide high level policy and political support to the Divisional and Branch Offices to support the Unions national policy and political objectives.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will have proven political and policy skills with expertise in public policy analysis, research and writing along with experience in political advocacy and lobbying. Direct experience in the field of energy policy would be advantageous but not required. It is essential that you:

  • have a high attention to detail,
  • are self-motivated and possess initiative,
  • are capable of working both autonomously and as part of a team,
  • are confident with Microsoft Office, including in developing spreadsheets, presentations and reports,
  • are confident and experienced in dealing directly with clients and stakeholders.

Your routine duties will consist of providing political and policy support for the Unions priorities, including (but not limited to):

  • Staffing ETU leadership during political lobbying, senior departmental engagements and other key strategic stakeholder meetings
  • Identifying and coordinating key lobbying opportunities and events such as roundtables, conferences, stakeholder forums, ministerial breakfasts and other forums relevant to advancing the Unions objectives
  • Preparing and delivering policy and political campaign and lobbying strategies both internally and externally
  • Develop and maintain key political stakeholder relations,
  • Providing general guidance and assistance to the ETU policy team including assisting with work peaks and achieving priority outcomes during pressing deadlines
