The Self-Determination Fund Limited (SDF) seeks an accomplished and visionary Chief Development Officer (CDO) to join their executive leadership team. This is a rare and meaningful opportunity to contribute to an Indigenous-led organisation with a bold mission: to build long-term, community-driven change by enabling economic and social self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the CDO will oversee a highly skilled executives, who play a central role in shaping the Fund’s long-term direction and sustainability. This pivotal role combines strategic oversight with operational excellence—advancing legal and policy initiatives, guiding organisational strategy, identifying new revenue opportunities and increasing the Fund’s profile and reach through targeted advocacy and communications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and execution of integrated strategies that support the Fund’s mission and growth objectives.
  • Oversee the development of policy frameworks and legal initiatives that drive sector-wide impact.
  • Elevate the Fund’s brand and visibility through effective marketing and communications strategies.
  • Strengthen internal structures and operations to support scalable, values-aligned growth.
  • Foster strategic partnerships across government, community, and corporate sectors.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to senior team members, supporting a collaborative and inclusive culture.

About You

We are seeking a leader with a strong track record in strategic development and a deep understanding of the unique dynamics of purpose-driven work.

You will bring:

  • Executive-level (C-Suite) experience in strategy, policy or advocacy, preferably within a philanthropic, community-controlled or financial services environment.
  • A clear understanding of governance, legal frameworks and the complexities of operating in Indigenous and advocacy spaces.
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence, collaborate and build trust across diverse sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing high-level communications and building public profiles.
  • A values-led approach, grounded in cultural awareness and humility.
