Save the Skate Campaigner

Environment Tasmania
  • Term: 6 months, part-time 3 days a week (22.8 hours) with potential for extension

About Environment Tasmania:

Environment Tasmania’s mission is to conserve, connect, and inspire stewardship of lutruwita/Tasmania’s natural landscapes. We have a proud record of effective campaigning for nearly 20 years. We were the first environmental group to campaign about the problems associated with salmon farming, including the impact a reckless expansion of the industry in Macquarie Harbour could have on the endangered Maugean skate and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

About the role:

Environment Tasmania is seeking an experienced and effective campaigner, looking for a rewarding role making a real difference, to deliver our Save the Maugean Skate campaign.

In this role you will be working to build state-wide awareness and support for the necessary science-based conservation actions, particularly to do with salmon farming, that are required to ensure the recovery and survival of this millenia-old species.

Networking and building support with Tasmanian business sector representatives, non-traditional stakeholders, regional communities, and decision-makers will be critical to this campaign’s success. This role will also involve collaboration with other national and state conservation organisations.

Environment Tasmania’s staff can work remotely or from our office in Hobart. Hours can be flexible but face-to-face crossover time with our team each week is essential.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct strategy, planning and delivery of campaign activities with advice sought from the board.
  • Build relationships with Tasmanian stakeholders including business sectors such as tourism, agrifood, and hospitality, and non-traditional stakeholders such as commercial and recreational fishing, and regional communities.
  • Generate campaign related media coverage, producing online content, press releases and social media, acting as the spokesperson for the campaign.
  • Undertake advocacy with key decision makers and government.
  • Work closely with other save the skate allies and NGOs, including those involved in markets related skate work.
  • Support the development of funding applications and reports to funders in coordination with the relevant staff and/or board member(s).

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous campaign experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with and successfully engaging different stakeholder groups, the media, and decision makers.
  • Strong communications skills and exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, and a willingness to oversee multiple moving pieces.
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic, show initiative and take responsibility for leading your work, but also coordinate well with others.
  • Experience writing submissions and grant proposals preferred.
  • An understanding of Tasmanian salmon farming issues and associated politics is an asset.
  • An ability and willingness to travel to meet with stakeholders across Tasmania and potentially interstate is essential.
