Our client is a voice for the Aboriginal communities Far North Queensland - focusing extensively on achieving meaningful outcomes for Native Title owners and claimants.
A rare opportunity has emerged to head up the Native Title Unit (NTU) legal function as a Principal Legal Officer.
The role
This role is ideal for a senior legal practitioner with a strong desire to work with the local Aboriginal community with a familiarity surrounding relevant Native Title legislation, case law and Future Acts negotiations.
The role will involve the following:
- Assist in the development of overall policies and procedures of the organisation;
- Provide relevant reporting to each council board meeting on associated NTU matters;
- Manage overall operations of the NTU to achieve stated operational objectives within budget;
- Mentoring of the other legal and community participants to ensure effective outcomes;
- Establish and maintain appropriate systems to ensure applicable legal deadlines are met to a high professional standard;
- Liaise with relevant external stakeholders to provide strategic advice to native title claimant groups;
- Develop and maintain a good understanding of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), relevant legislation, regulation, and case law to enable the provision of effective legal advice.
The Candidate
- A capacity to manage and execute leadership to an in-house legal team;
- Significant relevant post-admission legal experience;
- Ability to handle complex legal matters;
- Advanced written and oral communication skills;
- Understanding of the cultural, social, economic and political issues that affect the associated Indigenous people;
- Ability to communicate effectively with the Aboriginal community;
- Strong negotiating skills.
