ELA’s goal is to create a ‘race to the top’ on climate policy. The Graphic Designer role is central to amplifying our visual communication and outreach efforts. As a Graphic Designer, you will shape ELA’s visual identity, ensuring that our content and that of our partner groups resonates with diverse audiences and stakeholders. Your creative work will play a pivotal role in engaging and informing the public, partners, and stakeholders about the latest developments in climate, energy, and environmental issues.
This role is ideally suited to someone with a passion for climate action, strong visual communication skills, and a keen interest in using design to drive social change.
You’ll be part of a close-knit team of 11 dedicated individuals working to transform Australian politics, move beyond the “climate wars,” and lay the groundwork for Australia to lead in the global effort to reduce emissions and embrace renewable energy and low-emissions technologies.
You will collaborate closely with ELA’s digital director, engagement team, as well as our partners.
Design and Visual Communication: You possess strong visual communication skills, particularly in creating impactful designs for social media, print, and digital platforms. You understand how to translate complex ideas into compelling visuals that engage diverse audiences.
Content Creation and Curation: You have a keen eye for creating and curating content that resonates with various audiences. Whether it’s designing a report, a social media post, or a campaign banner, you know what makes content effective and visually appealing.
Collaboration and Relationship Management: You excel at managing constructive, mutually beneficial relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including internal teams, partner organisations, and contractors. Your ability to work collaboratively is key to our success in driving change.
Initiative and Proactivity: You’re a proactive self-starter who works comfortably with a high degree of autonomy. When you see an opportunity to enhance a project or solve a problem, you take the initiative to make it happen.
Strategic Design Thinking: You have the ability to think strategically about design, aligning your work with the organisation’s goals and the broader context of our campaigns. You can see the bigger picture and understand how your design choices contribute to achieving ELA’s mission.
Adaptability and Flexibility: You thrive in a dynamic environment where priorities can shift quickly. Your adaptability ensures you can pivot and adjust your design work as needed to meet evolving demands.
Curiosity and Open-Mindedness: You’re genuinely curious about how design can influence and inspire change. You enjoy exploring new design trends, tools, and approaches that will help you succeed in your role.
Communication: You can articulate design concepts clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Whether explaining your ideas to non-designers or presenting to stakeholders, you ensure that your message is understood.
Drive and a Can-Do Attitude: You share ELA’s belief that we can—and must—change the conversation on climate. You bring energy and determination to your work, always looking for creative solutions when challenges arise.
Understanding of Climate and Environmental Issues: While not necessarily a design competency, having a strong understanding of the issues we’re tackling—climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice—enhances your ability to create meaningful and effective designs.
Content Creation and Visual Storytelling: Design and produce compelling visual content, including social media graphics, reports, infographics, and campaign materials, to effectively communicate ELA’s and its partner group’s climate advocacy efforts.
Brand Management and Strategic Design: Maintain and enhance ELA’s and its partner group’s visual identity across all platforms, ensuring consistency and alignment with organisational goals. Develop design strategies that support key campaigns and events.
Collaboration and Capacity Building: Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to provide design support and training, helping to elevate the visual communication capabilities of ELA and its partners.
Designing Visual Content: Create and refine graphics, infographics, and other visual materials for social media, reports, and campaigns, ensuring that all content aligns with ELA’s messaging and resonates with diverse audiences.
Monitoring Design Trends: Stay updated on the latest design trends, particularly those that can enhance climate communication. Apply these trends to keep ELA’s visual content fresh and engaging.
Collaborating with Teams: Work closely with ELA’s Digital Director and other team members to develop design strategies for ongoing and upcoming campaigns. Provide design support to partner organisations, ensuring consistency and high quality across all visual materials.
Brand Stewardship: Maintain ELA’s brand identity across all platforms, ensuring all visual communications are cohesive and aligned with the organisation’s goals. Regularly update and refresh brand assets as needed.
Supporting Partners: Provide training and support to partner groups in design tools like Canva, helping them elevate their own visual communication efforts. Assist partners with bespoke design requests for specific campaigns or events.
Content Curation: Source and curate impactful visual content for social media and other platforms, aligning with the latest developments in climate and energy news.
Event and Campaign Preparation: Design materials for events, campaigns, and other initiatives, ensuring that all visual aspects are ready and effective for their intended audiences.
Photo and Video Editing: Edit photos and videos to enhance visual storytelling across various platforms, contributing to ELA’s overall communications strategy.
At ELA, you will be part of an energised and collaborative environment where your work will have a real impact. You’ll work alongside a passionate team dedicated to driving transformative change. As part of our organisation, you will have the opportunity to develop your career, gain deep experience, and contribute to meaningful climate action.
