About Effective Altruism Australia

Effective Altruism Australia (EAA) exists to support Australians in tackling the world’s most pressing problems. We do this by supporting Australians to donate to alleviate global poverty and tackle climate change, as well as supporting the Australian effective altruism community more broadly.

Beyond EAA, there are a lot of exciting things happening in effective altruism (EA) in Australia. Australia has the fourth largest effective altruist community in the world with hundreds of passionate individuals, and over 20 local, university, and cause-specific groups. The community punches above its weight in people doing highly impactful work, including local teams tackling challenges like policy advocacy and climate change, as well as many individuals doing important global work from Australia.

Events are an essential element of a thriving and impactful community. For example, the annual EAGx conference brings together hundreds of Australian EAs each year to build new connections, learn about job opportunities, and sometimes found new projects. The annual retreat for 25+ local organisers is a time to improve their strategies and learn new skills to then bring back to their local groups.

The Role

Effective Altruism Australia (EAA) is hiring an Events and Community Manager to play a leading role in running the EAGxAustralia annual conference, as well as many other valuable events in Australia. You will report to, and work closely with the Head of Community at EAA.

Thoughtful, smooth, well-run events facilitate all of the above, increasing the number of people inspired by the ideas of effective altruism, and having an outsized impact with their career and donations.

The role includes organising the annual EAGx Australia conference. The conference is consistently listed as one of the most impactful community events by the ~300 attendees. The successful candidate will take on some of the following: leading the event management and logistics, crafting impactful and engaging programming (e.g. content, speakers, etc.), managing the contractors and activating volunteers involved in making the conference happen and reducing overhead costs by implementing efficient event logistics systems.

In addition to EAGx, the successful candidate will take on many of the following areas of responsibility:

One-off events:

  • Develop content and present the ideas of effective altruism to university students, corporate events, online events, etc.
  • Run a range of in-person and/or online events for the effective altruism community, including fellowships, workshops, talks, speaker events, book clubs, and more.
  • Success could look like running 10-30 introductory EA events, increasing the number of Australians involved in the EA community.

Retreats and strategy days:

    • Running an annual retreat for EA organisers
    • Running retreats or strategy days in major cities for local EA organisers and community members.
    • Success could look like running 3 retreats and 4 strategy days for EA organisers and highly engaged EAs for 100+ people, providing valuable educational content, activating members, and increasing motivation and connections.

Events training and resources:

  • Develop a range of high-quality event resources for other community organisers around Australia
  • Train, support and collaborate with volunteers and local group organisers to run these events nationwide.
  • Success could look like developing high-quality introductory talks and fellowships and working with local organisers to roll out these events to 10+ groups to hundreds of participants.

What we’re looking for

Required Criteria:

  • Experience with logistics and operations for large events (50+ people).
  • Experience organising and running events such as discussions, talks, or seminars
  • Work independently in a results-oriented and structured way.
  • Collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating teamwork, accountability, and leadership.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in several of the areas of responsibility outlined above.

Desirable criteria:

  • Have a strong understanding of the ideas of effective altruism and be able to communicate the ideas of effective altruism clearly.
  • Experience in EA community building
  • Experience in public speaking, social media, and/or writing articles
  • Experience running large-scale events, including conferences and retreats.
  • Strong event programming and facilitation skills.

We are hiring for both an Events and Community Manager role and a Community Manager/Director role. However, we will only hire for one of these roles due to funding constraints. We believe an exceptional candidate in either of these roles will fill an important need at EAA and are seeking applications for both types of roles.

The Centre for Effective Altruism is funding part of the role as part of their Community Building Grants program, so approval for appointment will be contingent upon CEA’s endorsement.
