Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) is the largest environmental legal centre in the Australia-Pacific, dedicated to protecting our climate, communities and shared environment by providing access to justice, running ground-breaking litigation and leading law reform advocacy.
Since time immemorial, First Nations and Indigenous peoples have been taking care of their Countries in Australia and the Pasifik. The opportunity:

We are looking for a strong communicator with demonstrated marketing and fundraising experience to join our Fundraising, Marketing & Communications Team.

This role offers the opportunity to promote the role of EDO and its achievements for communities, nature, and the environment. You will be responsible for developing and executing EDO’s everyday giving, regular giving, marketing, and communications strategies across the organisation’s paid, earned, shared, and owned channels.

You will manage staff, resources, outputs, and priorities to achieve the goals of EDO’s FMC Team and the overall goals of the organisation. You will oversee EDO’s content, website, and social media platforms to ensure that the overall aesthetic, visual language, key messages, and tone of voice are in brand alignment and executed with high understanding and knowledge of the supporter.

The Head of Marketing & Fundraising plays a key role in developing and executing everyday donor and regular giver acquisition, fundraising and retention strategies in collaboration with the Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, and works with the Head of Philanthropy to achieve consistent branding on major donors communications, as well as collaborating on the design and implementation of digital strategies to engage and acquire major donors.

Candidate Profile:

We are looking for a talented marketing and fundraising professional with demonstrated management skills and high emotional intelligence to lead a talented team.

The role is responsible for growing EDO’s brand presence both in Australia and internationally and running two major lines of income generation, including our twice-yearly appeals and regular giving program. The successful candidate will have at least five years’ experience in building and executing fundraising strategies... They will have high emotional intelligence to lead a team that works across the country and can coach that team to generate the highest professional growth.

  • Demonstrated experience in marketing and fundraising strategy and execution.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make sound judgements and decisions based on consideration of different views.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail along with the ability to edit the work of others.
  • Excellent brand building skills with a focus on building brand equity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and to deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills suited to a range of audiences.
  • High technical competency and knowledge of digital tools and channels.
  • The ability to lead and develop a team with compassion and emotional intelligence.

Substantive experience

  • Experience in leading fundraising appeals including digital, direct mail and regular giving. A background in or knowledge of the law/and or science highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations people or diverse communities and individuals highly desirable.

Working with clients face-to-face:

EDO works with diverse peoples and groups across the Australian and Pacific communities, including people who are considered a high-risk group in terms of COVID-19.

In order to ensure the safety of all EDO employees and the people we work with and around, staff visiting overburdened communities are required to take a COVID-19 test three (3) days prior and on the day of travel to the overburdened community.
