About drummond street services & the Complex Trauma Counselling Service

drummond street services (DS) is a not-for-profit, non-denominational agency that has over 130 years in the development and delivery of innovative services that strengthen families and communities with a strong focus on evidence-based/informed practice and across the prevention, early intervention, treatment and recovery spectrum of universal and targeted support.

The Complex Counselling and Support Service provides trauma informed, recovery-oriented counselling services that are accessible, client-focused and meet the needs of clients, their families and carers. The service works with survivors of institutional child sexual abuse making an application to the National Redress Scheme and to survivors who are using Restore-Victorian Redress Counselling Service. The Service also supports people with disabilities who have experienced violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Utlising face-to-face, phone, in-home and online platforms to meet the diversity of clients' needs across Metro Melbourne and surrounds, the service will support whole-of-person counselling, case and practical support, offering a recovery model of support that is flexible, compassionate, respectful, empowering and holistic.

Your role as Senior Practitioner

drummond street is seeking a Senior Practitioner to join their Complex Trauma Counselling Service on a full-time, contract basis until the end of June 2021, with the possibility subject to funding of a longer contract. This role will be based in Inner Northern region (Carlton & Coburg locations), with travel with metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria required.

This role will see you lead, supervise and collaborate with a trans-disciplinary trauma informed team to ensure delivery of high quality, client led counselling and support services.  This is a critical position that is focused on achieving support and recovery goals of diverse range of clients and survivor communities, includes contributing to the success of the people who have experienced institutional harm to have their experiences heard and affirmed, including support sharing their stories with the current Disability Royal Commission. 

About you

You'll be driven to promote positive change and always provide the highest level of service. 

The following will be essential in this position:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field (i.e. Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health) and along with other training and experience related to delivery of trauma informed counselling services for people who experience complex trauma, with a specific focus on people with disability and survivors of institutional child sexual abuse
  • Current Accreditation with a relevant professional body, e.g., APS, AASW
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the counselling, family services and/or mental health sectors
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience providing clinical supervision to practitioners
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of delivering counselling for people who experience complex trauma and recovery approaches to intervention
  • Desirable to have experience working with survivors of institutional child sexual abuse and/or people with disability who experience violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of a range of therapeutic approaches for individuals, couples and families.
  • Demonstrated experience with providing interventions that support individuals and families with multiple and complex needs such as mental health, family violence and drug and alcohol issues
  • Demonstrated high level written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • A genuine interest and commitment to working with LGBTIQ, Aboriginal, refugee, CaLD and other higher risk cohorts.
