About the branch

The Clean Technology Branch facilitates the development and deployment of new clean energy technologies to contribute to Australia’s climate change response. The branch has oversight of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (the two principle bodies providing financial support for clean energy in Australia), the Offshore Renewable Energy team, and the Hydrogen Strategy and Hydrogen Initiatives team.

About the Clean Energy Technology Finance Team

The Clean Energy Technology Finance team handles statutory and policy oversight of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC). The agencies are a key component of the Government’s support for the clean energy sector in Australia, providing financial support (ranging from grants to commercial debt and equity) to renewable energy, energy efficiency and low emissions technology projects. The section is developing legislation, legislative instruments, and provides regular briefing on specific projects supported by the agencies. The section maintains linkages with several line areas with shared interest in the work supported by ARENA and CEFC.

The section also supports the Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner and the Independent Scientific Committee on Wind Turbines.

The Role 

The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct research and analysis (including data analysis) to develop and inform timely, high-quality policy advice
  • Analyse, apply and develop or reform legislation, regulations and standards
  • Support ministers and senior department executive, including by preparing briefs, speeches, ministerial correspondence and meeting information requests
  • Engage and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders, including by participating in committees or forums
  • Manage competing tasks and the timely completion of projects, including through effective procurement and contract management

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate is motivated, organised and able to work in a busy environment. They should have stakeholder engagement experience and have, or be capable of developing, a robust understanding of the work of ARENA, the CEFC or the development of Australia’s offshore renewable energy industry.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience in preparing briefing and policy development
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication
  • Be able to develop relationships, work collaboratively and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Have well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, and an eye for detail
  • Be adaptable, have initiative and possess sound judgement and decision-making capabilities
  • Have the organisational skills and ability to work across multiple priorities with minimal direction, including under tight deadlines

For this position, the following are desirable, but not essential:

  • Have data/quantitative analysis skills
  • One or more of the following: legal or regulatory experience; financial investment experience; or project management experience.
  • An understanding of the issues affecting, and ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
