The Lecturer in Indigenous Health will make a significant contribution to Indigenous health and medical education through teaching, research and service. The appointee will support the promotion of the School of Medicine and the National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research Innovation (NIKERI) Institute and maintain links and partnerships with relevant academic, cultural, professional and industry communities.

The appointee will form part of the teaching team within the School of Medicine, which is part of the Faculty of Health. Staff within the School report to the Executive Dean (Health) through the Dean of Medicine. The appointee will form part of the Indigenous health group in the School of Medicine and be actively involved with the NIKERI Institute.

The location for the position is the Deakin University Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. However, there is an opportunity to work primarily from within country in South West Victoria. Regular travel to Deakin campuses, clinical schools, teaching sites, partner health services and research institutes will be required.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to teaching and learning in Indigenous health in the School of Medicine courses that is consistent with the University’s principles of teaching, learning and the student experience
  • Contributing to building an active research program in rural Indigenous Health, including through publication
  • Supporting the development of rural learning environments that are culturally appropriate, flexible, student-centred and accessible, utilising appropriate technology
  • Supporting and implementing strategies to recruit Indigenous students to Deakin’s School of Medicine courses
  • Supporting the wellbeing of Indigenous students and helping them succeed in School of Medicine courses
  • Working alongside community organisations, agencies and Deakin University to create and enhance support systems for Indigenous students

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Masters level qualification, or Bachelors with extensive experience, in a health related field
  • Ability to support the development of curricula and resources that reflect an understanding of Rural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the School’s Rural and Regional teaching programs in a manner that influences, motivates, and inspires all students, but particularly Indigenous students, to learn
  • Ability to facilitate and conduct research in the area of Indigenous Health, including the preparation of high quality written work
  • An established knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and issues affecting Indigenous people in contemporary Australian society, along with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain credible, consultative and culturally sensitive working relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated capacity to work within the social, political and cultural environments of Indigenous Australians and relevant organisations
  • Ability to contribute to the development and maintenance of partnerships with community and with those working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

  • Applicants who do not identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander are required to demonstrate prior experience working with communities, or curriculum and/or students

  • Current Victorian driving licence
