The Deakin Research Integrity Unit (part of Deakin Research) is responsible for the central administration of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, and for required approval processes in relation to research involving animals, humans and genetically modified organisms, on behalf of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research).
Reporting to the Human Research Ethics Adviser, this position sits within and works closely with the Human Research Ethics team, a friendly, supportive, fast-paced, and integrity-focused team. We’re seeking someone who can facilitate the efficient and effective processing of Human Research Ethics applications through supporting Deakin’s Human Research Ethics Committee (DUHREC), Faculty administrative staff and with researchers and students seeking human ethics approval.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Provide high level administrative and secretarial support to DUHREC.
- Consult with available sources to gather relevant information and seek the expertise and advice of other people as appropriate.
- Understand local processes, prepare standard documents, assist in the compilation of required external and internal reports, maintain and manage records, regularly track progress of work tasks and identify key issues.
- Deliver effective and efficient outcomes and outputs against team and operational work plans.
- Recognise the importance of teamwork and of effective communication amongst team members and build rapport within immediate team in ways that are respectful and inclusive of others.
- Clarify expectations and respond promptly to requests, queries, or complaints to ensure stakeholder needs are met to agreed standards and timelines.
- Build productive relationships with a diverse range of existing stakeholders and actively seek to maintain positive relationships.
- Provide high level general advice to DUHREC and staff and students on the use of human participants in research in accordance with legislative requirements and University policy.
- Present information in a clear, structured, concise and tailored way by focusing on key messages and check that messages are understood and meet audience needs.
- Implement and monitor a wide range of administrative tasks associated with human research ethics, to ensure the efficient management of human research ethics within the University.
- Provide support to the Human Research Ethics Adviser as required.
- Generate new ideas and shares those ideas with others in the work area to improve process and practice.
- Any other duties as directed, commensurate with the scope and classification of the position.
Selection Criteria:
Qualifications and experience
- Completion of a degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience in high level administration involving complex documentation in a large organisation with detailed structures, policies and procedures.
- Experience in a high-pressure, diverse environment, involving online, face to face, telephone and written communication.
- Experience with confidential documentation/matters.
- Experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word), MS Teams, Zoom, database/information systems.
- Experience with Research Master database *Desirable
- An understanding of research integrity matters and/or experience with human research ethics committees (HRECs), issues and/or guidelines *Desirable
