Deadly Connections is an Aboriginal Community Controlled, not for profit organisation. Its purpose is to build stronger and safer families and communities by driving individual, social and systemic change through a multi layered approach of providing prevention, intervention and diversionary solutions, systemic/individual advocacy and raising community awareness through education.

About the role

This role is a Youth Mentor Team Leader position working with First Nations children and young people involved with or at risk of involvement with the criminal legal system. This new and innovative program offers individualised and group support through individual and group mentoring and activities to Aboriginal young people (10-17 years) which are fun, creative, and culturally responsive.

The main goals of the project are to:

  • Strengthen Aboriginal young people’s connection to culture
  • Divert program participants from the criminal legal system
  • Reduce risk of contact with criminal legal system
  • Improve school engagement
  • Provide accessible, pro social activities to program participants
  • Develop social and emotional skills
  • Provide both individual and group mentoring
  • Provide links to support for children and their families
  • Drug and alcohol education including risks associated with substance abuse

Key candidate considerations

  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working with children/young people as well as relevant qualifications and/or sector experience
  • Candidates must be comfortable working autonomously while also being a part of a small team
  • Applicants should be able to develop, implement and monitor individual plans while planning and running innovative group activities
  • The successful candidate should be comfortable in administrative and reporting duties as well as project planning
  • Applicants must be able to work in a trauma-aware and culturally responsive practice and have an understanding of the challenges faced by First Nations children, young people including those involved in the criminal legal system
  • Provide supervision and oversight of team and budget management
