  • Pay Rate: SHADS award Level 4.2 $42.60 per hour plus superannuation and holiday pay loading

  • Contract period: Date of appointment to 30/6/2024, with the option of renewal, dependent on funding.

The Darling Downs Environment Council Inc is a not-for-profit/non-government environmental advocacy organisation that promotes the protection of the environment and the principles of ecological sustainability. DDEC is one of nine regional Conservation Councils across the state that, along with the Queensland Conservation Council, form part of a unified conservation sector in Queensland. DDEC is incorporated in its own right and is governed by a management committee with nine members, who are elected and represent different local groups e.g Toowoomba For Climate Action, Friends of Escarpment Parks etc.

Our goal is to “Unite, Support and Advocate” for the environment with the community in actions and programs in the Darling Downs region.

about the role

As a Coordinator for DDEC, you will be encouraged to grow, develop and feel empowered to respond to the community and feed your assessment of critical issues back to the Queensland Conservation Council and the Minister for the Department of Environment and Science on a twice-yearly basis. 

Working hours offer a high degree of flexibility to meet work and personal commitments and may require occasional after hours and weekend work. There is also a requirement to travel and work outside of the region on rare occasions. 

The position is based at the Darling Downs Environment Council’s ‘eco-hut’ which is located in a very picturesque setting in Rangeville, Toowoomba.

Key areas of responsibility in this role include: 

  • Community engagement and assessment of local priorities for environmental preservation/restoration/energy alternatives as negotiated with the DDEC management committee and informed by organisational values
  • Liaise with the DDEC management committee to ensure the effective operation of the centre and administrative systems (e.g. website, facebook page, quarterly newsletter)
  • Coordinate and delegate submissions or campaigns for new or emerging environmental issues impacting on the Darling Downs region, as approved by the DDEC Committee
  • Organise and/or participate in meetings with local, State and Federal elected members and government agencies to discuss environmental matters relevant to the region
  • Represent DDEC to relevant groups, committees and panels wherever possible and necessary
  • Assist with endeavours to locate funding opportunities to enhance the work of DDEC
  • Actively engage media for the purposes of public education and promotion of DDEC’s work
  • Maintain communication with members, volunteers, and supporters with oversight of DDEC’s projects and communications
